Armatus tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would brycon, temensis, oscars/GT, and or large catfish be okay tankmates for armatus?

They could work in theory, but its likely that the cichluds would either out compete / bully the armatus just like a dorado or gar OR the armatus will survive to be big enough that he views the cichlids as food. They are after all the natural prey items of a big payara.

Brycon can be hit or miss. Think of them as a miniature dorado.

Big cats can be OK as ling as they're not too terribly much larger. It would be a good idea IMO to give the army a head start. My juruense doesn't bother anyone that's too big to eat.

I have everyone in separate tanks.

Im getting the armatus - if we have to do a separate tank we will.

I am planning on introducing everyone so that they are about 3/4 of the army's size - to avoid being considered food.

Once the army gets to the point where the oscar/gt are food sized he will be upgraded or the others will move out.

definitely not put brycon with anything but aggressive cichlids that are over twice the size of them from my experience. A tank with slightly over 12" Peacock bass and a small school of 5" silver dollars are what im introducing a new 6-8" armatus too. The peacocks are not aggressive but i do have the silver dollar school as dithers to allow them to take their aggression out if needed. I know once the armatus gets comfortable he will try going after the silver dollars but they have the best chance being a school and being too large to fit into the armatus's mouth + their pretty fast and have alot of room to get away in a 180 gallon tank.

Peacock bass are always a good tank mate for characins except dorado from my personal experience. And other silver fish are not.

Yea, I saw that video.

Not certain what I should do.

I can hold fish till everyone is the right size.

My main concern honestly is that the army gets bullied by the others.

I expect that sooner or later someone in my tank is going to disagree with someone or get hungry.

Just bracing myself now as it seems to always happen with large aggressive community tanks.

Maybe I wont get the army...but...its hard to say no while ordering from aquascape right now at the same time.

Just remember as beastly as armatus seem, they're still pretty shy sometimes.

As this goes on, its becoming apparent that I will either pass on this opportunity or set up a separate tank.
