aro and gar

Silver aro are not that aggressive compared to their Asian cousin and barramundi from Australia. It's safe to keep these two species together.

Depends on the species of Gars and the species of Aros..

As a general rule, Jardinis can not be kept (long term) with any tank-mates..

As a general rule, Alligator Gar can not be kept (long term) with any skittish tank-mates or tank-mates which can be eaten.

There are skittish and delicate gars (like long-nose gar) which has a tendency to freak-out and hit the side of the tank when kept with aggressive fast moving fish.

All in all, there are a lot of combinations, some have higher chances of working than others.

Personally, I have kept Silver Aro with Florida Gar and Alligator Gar. (Alligator gars are not with me any more). This worked for me because the Silver Aro was docile and didn't spook the gars. And the gars were always about half the size of the Silver Aro and hence didn't threaten the Aro. I still have the Aro and the FL gars together in a 200G.

As Brian said, please check with the experts in the Gar section.

Good luck,

If you did enough research, you would know that Silver Aros are more skittish. Skittish Aro can make a gar break it's back when spooked. I'm sure Gar experts shall chime in soon.

I've got an asian merlion gold, alligator Gar, long nose Gar, and two silver aros in my tank for 5 yrs already and no problem at all with the four species.

Every Silver Aro is different. ;) I've kept Aros and Gars together for 4 years. As long as you got a nonaggressive/nonskittish Aro, will do fine with a gar. Just curious but is your Merlion gold an XB or RTG?

as a general rule gars and aro are a bad combo. the aro can spook the gar and the gar can attack the aro as they have an affinity towards silver fish. none of the gar experts will recommend this combo. i personally have 4 florida gars with my aro.. the aro is about 20 inches, the biggest gar is 16 and the smallest is 4 inches..but it doesn't mean if it worked for me it will work for you as well..

Any pics of this tank? The silvers and gar must be huge.
