Hi guys just joined the forum, I am currently looking at buying a new house a plan to get a new tank.

I recently sold my 6ft tank which had oscars, red tail catfish, blue lobster and a silver Aro in and want to move to something a bit bigger.

I'm planning something around 8-10 feet long 2.5-3 wide and 3-4 high. I have always wanted to keep Asian Arowana and really want a pair of sting ray.

So first question is will 2.5 be wide enough for sting ray? Or will it need to be 3 feet?

And I suppose second question will be can I keep a pair of Ray's with some Asian Aros? I want to get a few Aros and have read that they need to be kept in around 5 or 6 if keeping more than one?

I won't be planning to build the tank anytime soon as I need to find the right house to put the tank in first but I like to do my research in advance, so j know what I want and what I can keep together so I can build the tank to suit the fish.

Can I plant the tank with Ray or is it a waste of time?

Cheers for any replies good or bad

Al

The width depends on the rays you want to keep. If you're fine with a "teacup" species, then 2.5' should work, but wider is always better. If you want larger species, such as motoro or Leo, then you will probably want at least 3', but 4' is better.

With your chosen fish being arowanas and rays, I don't think you should worry about any height over 3'. At that point you will just be making the tank thicker and heavier without much gain from it.

Yh I'm not too fussed about what type of Ray just want a pair. I doubt I'd have room for a 4' wide tank, I might try to get a 3' one a lot of it depends on the wife lol I've managed to get her to say yes to a tank up to 10'

So I take it having the extra foot in height isn't really much of a benefit? obv if I'm going to have somewhere in the region of 5k upwards worth of aro in it I want it to be as good as possible.

Don't skimp on the width then, you want your fish to be able to do more than barely turn around. 3' bare minimum IMHO.

I guess that makes sense. There a chilli red in a store by me that is in a 5x2x2 and poor thing looks cramped! Last thing I want is that.

If you are looking at arowanas and rays then I think you want to get something 3' wide for the long run. That might still prove to not be wide enough, but it will be a long time before you would need to rehoming/upgrading. I believe that arowanas are capable of lengths near 4', if I'm not mistaken. Also, any teacup ray should be assumed to reach 12-14". Other types of rays should probably be estimated to reach 24"+. It really depends on how comfortable you are with keeping the fish, or getting rid of them if they get too cramped in the tank.

Definitely, the wider and longer the better.

Get the tank first then we will talk about stock

Normally I'd say this is a good way to do it as many people don't get tanks large enough to keep the fish they want, but M Mopeytitan is planning for the fish he wants. It seems to me he is doing it the better way. He is asking for the requirements for the fish he wants and planning the tank from there.

If I wanted a RTC but didn't know about them I wouldn't go and buy a 55 then ask about putting one in it. No, I'd ask tank requirements so I can buy or build something proper for the size it gets.

M Mopeytitan , keep asking your questions. It is good you are researching the fish you want and their requirements first.
