Aro and Ray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Normally I'd say this is a good way to do it as many people don't get tanks large enough to keep the fish they want, but M Mopeytitan is planning for the fish he wants. It seems to me he is doing it the better way. He is asking for the requirements for the fish he wants and planning the tank from there.

If I wanted a RTC but didn't know about them I wouldn't go and buy a 55 then ask about putting one in it. No, I'd ask tank requirements so I can buy or build something proper for the size it gets.

M Mopeytitan , keep asking your questions. It is good you are researching the fish you want and their requirements first.

Thanks, my main concern is that I want Arowana specifically Asian and hope to keep 3 pairs, colours yet to be decided. The Rahs were sort of an add on that I thought would set the tank off nicely. And have read that it's ideal to have some sort of bottom feeder with Aros.

If it turns out I can't have them then I can't have them. I know quite a bit about the Aros already it's mainly the Rays I'm worried about

You hope to keep three pairs of aros? Or rays? 6 aros would need a huge tank, I'm not sure if it is even possible, I've always been told Asians are a bit more aggressive than their South American counterparts. I don't have any experience with them to confirm that though.

As for the rays, what do you like? Many people start with motoros. They do get large, though a 36" wide tank should be able to hold all but the largest of them for life. Leos are similar but quite a bit more money.

Hi fellow uk citizen!

36 wide is best, but can easy keep a pair of most rays in at 30 wide for several years, if not longer if smaller rays like marble motoro or retic.

In relation to height, 36 height is more than enough to appreciate amazing Asians, any deeper and is a pain to clean to get to the bottom!

As far as I'm aware the Asian Aros can be kept in groups as long as they're in a group of 5/6 or more and added together so as not to get terratorial. This is my reason for asking as I've seen videos of 6 or more Asian Aros in similar sized tanks. i only want a pair of Ray's as the tank is mainly only for the Aro and read that I needed something lower in the tank

Hi, where about in the Uk are you?

My aim was 36 tbh but only reason I asked about if 30 wide would be OK was dependant on if the wife will let me take an area of the floor up with a 10x3 tank lol.

And on the height I just thought it would give the Aros more room to swim about but if it would be more of a pain than it worth I'll stick with 3'

Thanks

Good that you are researching BEFORE you buy, nice one. I'm in the UK.
ND aquatics all day long to build the tank.
3 foot ABSOLUTE MINIMUM!! any smaller you will regret it. That is a lot of aros you want to keep and rays will not love you back if you go smaller than 3 foot wide.
Plants can be one, but not in the sand, tie them to wood. But personally I have nothing, just a few bits of wood the rays like o mess about with but not tall wood as it gets in the way of breeding.
Good luck.
