first things first NEVER tap the aquarium.. thats the universal law of any fish keeper.

i just got into aros, and i got my silver when it was 2" long. He started off in a 10 gal so i could teach it how to eat sticks after it dropped its egg sack. every day at random i'd tap the tank a little bit. in the beginning he was scared, but he got used to it after a while. now he is 12"+ and in my big tank. he isnt scared of me at all. I can run up to my tank, tap the glass, stick my hand in, etc. He has never jumped and is always calm if i keep my water pristine. (50% wc weekly)

Im not saying your wrong, but it has seemed to work for me :headbang2

this is subjective and cannot be applied in general.

Guys, check this out .. happened last night at 09:00PM PT. (2 days after being hurt). Wife and I were at the dinning table; the lid was open for the feed time for fish; Aro out of the blue; jumps out of the tank; 3 feet above and lands 5 feet across under the dining table. He fell with a thud; scrambled around for about 30 secs under the table; we did not move cause we could not see it and did not want to stamp on the Aro.

When we got up; he flipped from the side over to straight on the belly and squabbled around across the floor; I attempted to lift it with hands; but kept slipping, so I get 2 plates, catch it between them and drop him into the tank. the second we put him in, he jumped right out another 3 feet out; but this landed back in the tank.

Not sure what spooked him out. I have heard of Aros jumping to death but seeing this was .

Damages - In addition to the original damage from the drift; he now has the lower fins all beat up; an interior gill was on the floor wiht blood; both sides are bruised up with scaled hanging out. In short looks like a newbie taking on Mohd. Ali.

After letting him settle in for 30 mins. I fed it 4 market shrimps, which he devoured immediately.

Medication - I dropped in 8 tabs of Terracycline (anti fungal) and a dose of Melafix. Covered the tank with a blanket to give him quiet time + privacy; within a minute he jumed and splashed water 5 times; sure enough did not like the cover.

The temp. is at 80 - 82; water condition is good; lights are off. He seems to have settled in and not jumping much but still a little edgy.

What an experience!!!! Hope the Aro recovers soon .. I am going monitor him closely for 10 days to see recovery & avoid infection.

I believer everything happns for a reason and this leap had a silver lining too. My wife who was against a bigger tank; came forth herself and agreed that we should get a bigger home for the Aro!! :headbang2 Shopping for a 180G; let me know if anyone has one in So Cal.

Guys, so have you seen this behaviour; and why do you think he leaped. The only different thing that happened last night was, we fed the Blood Parrots before we gave him his meal. If that's the case, I LOVE my aro temperament.

WOW!!! That is crazy! I hope your aro gets better bro.

aro would only jump for food most of the time, so if it doesnt see food/or insects above but still jump basically its telling u something he doesnt like with the set-up i would put a very close eye to it to observe what he doesnt like

Hi Dayak,

The set up is the same since the day he was introduced to the tank ayear ago. Nothing has changed. Same set up + same tank mates.

is it always been like that?
it has to be something thats why its edgy, edgy is my aro name LOL, because he was till i tamed him

How did you tame edgy???

i spend alot of time obeserving him, my wife likes to talk to him LOL, and we dont hesitate putting our hand in the tank and tickle him :P
now he is very tame aro will not freak out when the enviromental outside the tank no matter what we do including tapping the glass and WC with garden hose turn light on/off his tank first my kitchen light first or vice versa but i also notice when my daughter around he shows bit of edgy, i need to investigate whats up with that LOL
we do maintain glass cover still with little opening due to my HOB
