When talking about golds, an xback is an aro that has gold rim developing/developed on it's 6th scale row, a highback will reach the 5th level, and anything under that is just an RTG (red tail gold). In the first picture you can see gold on the 5th level clearly so immediately you know it isn't a regular RTG, in the second picture when looking right at the top of the fish you can see gold rim developing on the 6th level.
Hope that answers your question.

Heres a picture that I hope helps show the levels to you.

Why is then I see loads of xbacks that never fully cross over. Does thst meam its a rubbish xback ? Amd one has paid too much.... or is it known that u buy a xback.. amd thats the risk ... ir may not cross over?
Just curious as xback is so much more in price than a rtg .

Through research I've done and my own experience, you will never know 100% how good or bad of a fish you have when it's a juvie, there may be a few things to look out for but at young sizes simple stuff like tank background can make a alright fish look like a great fish so you can't be 100% (although guys with many years competing in showing arowanas must have a few things they look for).

They seem to mostly grade juvie xbacks on how fast the rim starts to reach the 6th level, but after that it's up to chance how the gold develops aslong as you provide good water and diet it comes down to genetics.

Thanks jkm... makes sense.

Just curious.. out of all the xbacks sold and grown... what is an approximate % for those that fully cross over?
I havnt seen many.

Its not uncommon seeing Xbacks without complete 6th level shine. In fact there have been RTG's which have achieved 5th level shine and little pearlies and high backs getting the 6th level shine and pearlies.. Its all Genes
