luckily the stand broke the fall of your aro.
Imagine if that big a fish jumped and landed directly on the floor, it would have sustained internal injuries. Try putting some towels on the floor near the tank, it would prevent the floor from being slippery and also cushion the fall of the fish if it jumps out.

Yikes! Its pretty hard to prevent that from happening but what I do is put the couch cusions (big ones you sit on) over the tank cause my aro gets really jumpy and scared when I clean it. This way he dosnt get out and when he jumps he is not hitting hard glass... and when I cant have pillows on the tank I am watching him all the time to make sure he dosnt leap out at me. Glad to hear he is ok

That happened to me with an African Tiger fish (12 incher). No joke I was going to wash the aquarium so I removed the 2 glass lids and the Tiger shot out of the water so fast that it easily went 6 feet in the air ( almost fit my ceiling) then came crashing down to the ground and started to flop on the floor throwing itself up at least 4 feet in the air with each flop. Now my Daughter is there with me and is totally in amazement and tried to help me by scooping it up with her hands...so I quickly shouted NO...she never really noticed the teeth until I pointed them out while it was in my hand. Not fun.

how's your fish doing now? i think you were lucky because at least you caught him.. it happened to me too... i woke up one morning and it disappeared so i found it on the ground, hard as a rock...
