I work at an LFS part time. Today a gentleman dropped off a 24" pearly white aro. It has some slight eye damage from being in a 55 gallon at his resturaunt with crappy water. Anyway he gave it to us since he was closing the resturaunt :).

It has damage to both eyes that appears to be some sort of bacterial infection. One eye is red and inflamed while the other has some lens corossion.

I took this fish home to rehab in a 125 since our shop owner didnt want it. I have begun atreatment of amoxacillin and ampicillin, while planning 20% water changes weekly.

I have searched the forums and found some tips but does anyone have any other tips to help speed up his recovery?

Pardon my ignorance, I have been in saltwater for a long time now and dont know too much about specialty deisease treatment for freshwater fish.

Thanks,
Brian

That is a beautiful fish and it's a real shame someone let it get to this condition. But on the bright side at least he knew when to call it quits and hand it over to someone who can help. I have a friend who's a pharmacist and she herself raises fish. She told me that she knew some home made concoctions to help curing fish should I ever need help. I'll try and ask around for you.

very sad to see such a beautiful fish in that condition. Ive personally never seen a aro with red eye like that. If I was you i would keep lighting off as much as possible and add salt to tank and keep heat around 84. Also it looks like your water line is low, if you can put it as high as you can. keeping it low doesnt help at all no matter what anyone tells you.

Big Ol' water changes it is. I wish it was a platinum......if only lady luck would shine her magical aro light upon me. It just looks like a regular aro to me, just mother of pearl color ( I was just suprised it had both of its barbels). I just want to get this fish back in good health, I dont plan on keeping it long term, I just like to do what I can to to help out. I see too many fishes that are too far gone to even attempt to rehab them, it saddens me.

Am I on the right track with the Amox and Ampicillin? Or are these useless?

Beautiful aro man! Do ur weekly water changes and add some salt and that guy will become even more beautiful.

looks like a high shine to me do 25% every 2 days

Thanks for the replies, I will stay on the water changes. He is swimming with more vigor now so hopefully he will pull through. I have already found him a home either way, a marineland 300g deep dimension is in this guys near future.

I wouldnt use those meds. Aros are very sensitive to medications. Just prestine water will help him the most. Do you have a place to rehome him? because a 125 will not be big enough if you plan to keep it the rest of its life.
