I have a silver aro in a 120 he is only about 9 to 10 inches right now and I have had him for three months and lately he has been extremely jumpy, he actually jumped out of the back of the tank a couple of days ago while I was standing there. I now have cardboard covering every gap for now so he can't jump out again. I haven't added any new fish and the water parameters are fine. He is still eating like normal just really jumpy. Any suggestions??? Thanks Jamie

thats something aros do man. they jump.you are going to need something a little stronger than just cardboard.

Well the gap is only about an inch and I never covered it before cause he was never this jumpy, I just really feel like its something else cause he is acting so different.

Yea, Aro's are jumpers. Make sure that you have a strong lid on that tank, not
just cardboard.
I guess I noticed my aro being more jumpy around that size too. He still is a little
freaky ( at 13'' ). But each fish is different and you may eventually learn why he
is jumpy. Mine for example hates when I move/flick a towel or shirt around. The movement of it always gets a strong reaction.

There are many threads about aros getting out through narrow gaps, they just like to jump and an 18" aro can get through a 1" wide gap.

I have a heavy thick glass lid with a pretty heavy light holding it down, the card board was the only thing I had at the moment to cover the gap I'm not planning on leaving just card board there. It's good to know that this is normal, I had just really noticed him acting crazy this past few weeks, he actually knocked a couple of scales off from hitting the lid, so I was worried. Thanks for the info!

Three of mine get nervous and jumpy if I approach the tank with lights off and make sudden movements, like picking something up.. when someone they don't know approach the tank..on the other hand I have aro's that will handle everything without an eye blink....just go on swimming...like was said, it depends from fish to fish...but keep a tight cover, anyway..it is one of the most traumatic things, to see those guys dry on the floor.

aros that barely know you, will jump when they see you. thats just what they do. spend more time with him, feed more often in smaller portions. when i walk in the room, my aros go crazy on the front of the glass begging for food. yours runs away n tries to jump to his death with no regrets. he dont kno you, spend more time with him

he's a teenager! and he's feeling the call of the wild. Mine have gotten jumpier than normal during adolescant times.

Almond Tree/Ketapang leaves added to the water reaaly calms them down, immensley. Leave a night light on. Listen to everyone about the jumping, mine just did it the first time this am, struck the lid 3 times in a row!

Check his temperature. too.
Mine has been wild lately at 12.5", so it's fun!
