This is a question for many years in the future (or next week if I win the lottery xD) but what is a good tank size for an arowana? On Live Aquaria it says 250g, but I feel like that's too small? In case it makes any difference, I would probably get a silver. I like those guys the best and I have more experience working with them.

As an arowana keeper i would suggest a minimum of 6*3*2 feet for asian but silvers do tend to grow bigger so 8*3*2 feet. the main issue is the breadth of the aquarium the broader the aquarium the relaxin it will be to turn its massive body, this is what i feel..

X2, 8x3x2 should be around 250 Gallon. You don't really need a bigger thank with a small base area, tank should be at least 8' long (Asian can be kept in 6' long tank) and 3' wide and 2' high. Not necessary to get a higher tank if the long and wide are not enough for the fish !

This is an age old question that general brings about a flaming war, just go with what you think is a good size for one, but don't be rediculous and say a 55g is big enough. Personally I have kept 2x 17 inch silvers and 1x 18 inch jardini in a 215g

Have any of you guys suggesting an asian aro would be alright in a 6' tank actually ever seen one?

My green was about 45cm at about 18 months old when I sold it and was starting to make my 6'x30"x2' tank look too small. A friend has a red tailed gold he bought at the same time as my green, its in a tank thats 210cm long, 80cm wide and 70cm high and its getting pretty close to 2' long, I certainly wouldn't be happy keeping it in a 6' tank...

And to answer the OP's question, 8'x3'x2' minimum for a silver, anything 6' will be out-grown in a couple of years.

The South Americans do better with a length three times their size, but you could get away with a length of 10'. So I'd say, minimum, 10x4x3. Preferably, 12x4.5x3+

They are not easy fish to house.

The "rule of thumb" stating that the tank should be twice as long as the fish doesn't really work with aros because of how much they move. They've barely turned around, before they have to turn around again, and again, and again, as they never seem to stop swimming.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm not thinking minimum, because I know these are big fish and if I ever do get one, I want it to be happy. So basically, a tank the size of a wall would be the best case scenario (besides having a lake/river)? I might not ever get one because I get to work with them to some extent anyway, but if I ever get to own my own home, those are my dream fish. Who needs a giant tv when you can have a giant tank with a monster fish? IMO even if Asians were legal I wouldn't get one. Those suckers are MEAN.

Id say a 9x4x3 would be a nice size, everyone would love a 12ft but i dont think that would be neccessary, nice but a 10 would be ample imo.
