aro w/ discus in planted tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Done that and worked great. Lei plus 3 medium discus and 5 large angels. It's pretty much a gamble so if you don't try it you'll never find out if it will or not. Is this the Lei from RKC?

It's you! Fish picks up on owner personality.

So I borrowed a quote from your other post...... still fitting!

I believe Bderick had a really nice 120 growout with a black aro and some discus with a bunch of amazon swords. Maybe ask him.

Thanks for remembering:).

Yes it is a wonderful combo, but takes some work.

From my experience this is what I would do;

Tank depth, 30" would look better and provide more separation, but is harder to maintain and would require better lighting. I would not go with a 30" tank unless the width of the tank was at least 24", it is very hard to reach the bottom.

I would establish the tank as planted first. Go with pressurized Co2, adequate lighting and filtration. There is nothing worse then having a planted tank taken over by algae. I would definitely look to the planted forum for advise.

Go with adult discus. Raising discus in a large tank tends to keep them from reaching their full growth potential. Also discus are grazers so keep a good amount of the tank bottom open.

If you can pull it off, the combo/setup is one of the best there is. I had mine for near a year, lots of headaches but well worth it.

i was thinking of a 225 6x2.5x2...

30" wide or tall?

I'd suggest a black aro to keep with the south american theme. I think discus are tougher than many people give them credit for once they get to a decent size, I've seen them kept in a huge unplanted tank (3000L+) with bichirs, large plecos, dats, other cichlids etc.

thanks for all the info, everyone. i'm gonna start work on this project around the end of the summer.

the lei is from rich, but i got it off of house64.

btw. you're a real comic genius sean :irked:

I think you should introduce the Lei and discus combo together as soon as possible. If you introduce the Lei to discus when it's bigger it might get territorial with the discus. Start early and train it early and you have a good chance of success. I have had this Lei with discus since he was 3" and probably from the same batch of Lei you got from Rich. My Lei never bother the discus or angelfish even when they cross. The Lei does like to chase the two archers whenever they cross path.

thanks for the advice. i'm not going to start on this project for a few more months... gotta save up that paper, son. i'll start with a new aro too :D

I'm going to do something similar, but with some geos also and a black arowana in a planted tank. Just remember to introduce the arowana last to an already established tank.

I like keeping fish from roughly the same area together. -probably an OCD of mine.

Keep us updated.

i have a 5inch jardini and 7inch silver with a bunch of 3-6 inch discuss and no problems yet, i got my eye on them tho
