around how much money you spent since day one?

Expensive to start free to maintain as long as your parents pay the electric, water, gas and sewer.

Expensive to start and expensive to maintain if you pay the bills every month. Not to mention winter is at hand and thats 2x my utility cost!

I "skimp"where I can, less lighting/led, finding decor, cheap substrate and pothos (less wc) helps the wallet!

And if your looking to really budget or save, try DIY stands, lighting, food, decor, covers, pythons, stand, filter pads, no carbon etc. A hardware store can provide you with materials but only you can make them in useful cost saving solutions! Many good DIY threads around!

I've spent about $5000 so far.

After reading this thread, I don't feel nearly so bad about that.

+1. x1,000,000

I'd say 10k in the last year or so, maybe slightly more. The maintenence on my apartment (utilities) has increased approx $250/mo, however. That's potentially nastier.

I couldn't come up with a total, it's been such a long process. I've been keeping fish continuously for 32 years, with the exception of the nine months I spent in Mexico as an exchange student when I was 16. When I was a kid I would spend a few hundred dollars per year, since I've been an adult it has been a few thousand per year. There have been a few years that I spent more than average - my 135 reef build probably cost three or four grand ten or twelve years ago, my 210 show tank cost around $5500 including the cabinet. If I had to guess it has probably been somewhere around $30,000-$40,000, maybe more, not including utilities. Some day I will build my big concrete tank and really blow some dough! :headbang2
