  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for a single silver without tank mates i think it would be enough.

Watch that combo. My arowana basically killed my gar. Not out of aggression, but they went for the same food, the aro striking as aros do, spooked gar, broken back.

If I had to guess I'd say 2 years in that tank for an aro, then look for something in the 8'x3' range.

Or if you're rolling in $$$ you could get yourself an Asian...

hmm well then. aro and gar not a good combo? well then. thats deffinatly something to watch out for .. so you had both of them together? other then that incident were there any other problems?

and as for the asian comment. are they smaller then a silver? like would an asian be set for life in my dimensions or? .. and if they could be like $150 CAD then it's debatable to do that instead of eventually having to upgrade. how big will the asians usually get to?

2ft+ (smaller than silver and black)

for $150, it might get you a Green or Banjar Red

for $400, it can get you a Red Tail Gold

for $800, you can get a Chili Red

for $1000, a Super Red is available for you

for $1500, a Blue base Cross Back is another option

for $1800, you can get a Gold Bar, the Golden

for $2000+, hmmmm you have to do your own research!

but then again, your in NewFoundLand and not in Toronto / Ontario, so prices may vary!

:D

wow prices are so cheap.

it's ok price!

for fish like Green / Banjar Red, they are fish that were being smuggle with other fish into Canada

because it cost $120 per license to get the arowana imported

$120 license + cost of fish, think about it, the store can't afford the low price

;)

so they are coming in ... in a different way ... to keep the cost down

yah im not in the hobby long enough to pay more then 150 for a fish. wasnt really even planning on spending that much but if its going to be like 100 times better option then a silver maybe ill save extra for a while to justify spending $150. .. still thinking the $40 silver is sounding good too. because at this point id hate to spend 150 then turn around and in 2 months something drastic happen and him end up dead. its a small consideration stilll but most likely the silver is still sounding better. and if i can get 2 years out of the 155 .. i should be settled into my own place by then and probably move up and build a plywood tank for myself. as long as i can get a couple of years

With sensible feeding a silver aro will grow 1-1.5" per month. Though realize typical silver aros are gluttons and will continue eating if overfed, this can lead to 2-3" per month of growth. So if reasonably fed a 4" silver will reach 20" in 12-16 months, at this point the tank you described above will start to become cramped. The silvers growth rate will slow once it reaches 24-25" to just 1-2" a year.

I have kept 24"plus silver aros in a 6x2x2' tank and IMO it is on the small side. With the tank you have described above I would say that you should be looking to move the silver aro in as little as a year, but more likely around 18-20 months.

Yes, I had them together with some other fish, tank is a 170G 6x1.5x2.5. I got the aro in March at around 8", never had any problems between them, in fact they totally ignored each other, until the incident when the gar broke his back, this was in June.

I know a lot of people keep gar with aros and other things, but these random incidents can spook gar and lead to injuries. If I keep another gar I'll probably keep it with other gars, and bichirs...it just isn't worth the risk IMO.

interesting, i did not know that.

well this is a scratch anyways. measued the back of dads suv with the seats folded down and it will not fit without putting alot of weight on the back of his seats. i can't get anyone with a truck to go out and the cheapest price i can get to get it shipped to me is around 500 CAD too which is the price of the tank so thats not worth it. dunno what to do. keep waiting till another comes up i guess :(:(
