Hi Guys!

I'm a new member from New York City, and I'm glad I found this site and community--everyone seems helpful and nice.

I am thinking of buying a silver arowana (not bigger than 6 inches). My setup is a 75 gallon tank with a 305 Fluval, and I kept silver (babies) arowanas before, but they always died. The temperature was always around 80 F and I did biweekly 20% water changes.

I want to be successful this time! Is there any recommendations anyone would suggest??

Thanks in advance

Do you have, or plan to have a bigger tank for when it out grows the 75Gal?
If not don't bother.
If you do you might want to change water weekly not bi weekly. I can't really comment more because i don't know about Fluval 305. They usually die for a reason though.
Did you keep other fish in with it? if so what?

Welcome to MFK.

Silver aros grow pretty quick, on average 1-1.5" per month. Growth spurts of 3" per month are not that uncommon. If your 75g tank has a 48"x18" footprint the aro will only be good in that tank up to about 16". You will need to be planning for a new tank within the next 6 months or so. Best to upgrade to a least a 6x2x2' 180g tank, this will last the aro up to a couple years. After that you'll be looking at getting a 300g 8'x2.5'x2' minimum.

The 305 is bare minimum for that tank anyway? I have a 305 plus a Eclips top on my 40g. Arowana get way too big for that tank? but without knowing all the details( water chem, etc..) its hard to say? just because you do water changes (its a big plus) but thing could still be wrong?

Did they look very skinny? Mabye they had a parisite. Anyways i have one in my 180g and he was around 6 inches when i bought him, now one month later he has grown 3-4 inches! What im trying to get across is you really need to be careful when buying these fish, i used to think people were stupid telling me i needed a huge tank for ONE fish. But they really do grow fast so i just wanted to let you know what I think about this, just be ready to upgrade i personally have found it easier to start out with a big tank. -Chase

Some things I would do would be 1. up filtration, dont need to break the bank, I saw big als has a penguin emperor 400 for under 30 bucks, or check craigslist. 2. Get a good source for live food until theyre pellet trained, I feed my fish minnows from my pond until theyre pellet trained, but you can also buy feeders and worms and such. 3. Dont overstock, 1 maybe two aros, two only if no other fish, 1 if its with something. 4. Keep up on water changes 5.plan on getting a larger tank or a pond for the future. Theres good deals on CL for large tanks if you have the space, if you start looking now by the time you need it you should have found some good deals

You may want to look into other fish, there are a lot of cool fish that could live well in a 75g. Search the threads, I've fell in love with so many different fish because of this site, some better suited for the tank I have.

No not a good idea. Better to get aros eating pellets first off. And buying feeders is the most unhealthy thing you can feed your fish.

Welcome to MFK. I too was wondering if your tank was FULLY cycled before when you lost your baby aro's.

To be successful @ raising fish, you must have your tank COMPLETELY cycled. Great advice from everyone else except for the live food til you pellet train it. I would just start with pellets asap.
