After the lights go out, my silver seems to splash and smack up against the lid, every 30 minutes or so. It's other inhabitants are a clown knife about the same size, little over a foot, a few bichers and fire eel. Could it be getting spooked by the cl or is this a normal thing? If the tank wasn't in the bedroom i wouldnt care. It's fins are fine, but the cl does dart at everything during the day.. Is there any dithers that are wuick enough overnight? Thanks

I notice that too when i first started having fish. That y i have two set of light: 1 normal lighting and other moon light for night. The moon light is on 24/7 and the normal light is on a timer. the moon light act like a night light and when both on same time, it give the fish a faded blue tint.

+1 for DIY LED moonlight. christmas lights work great for this

My silver was doing the same thing for a while, but it stopped when he ate a few of his tank members. Turns out he was hunting.. Maybe your aro is doing the same?

I don't think it's hunting cause everything else in there isnt very far from a couple inches of it. As far as the diy lighting, have you guys had this problem and that was the answer? If so, what color xmas lights, and how many? Appreciate the replys..

Odds are it's the clown knifes causing the aro to jump. Clown knifes are passive when the lights are on, but when it's gets dark, it's hunting time and if no small fish or enough food to satisfy their hunger is available, your aros fins will become the next best thing. Been through this before. If you don't want your aro freaking out when the lights are off, feed when the lights go out, and feed all tank inhabitants well.

sick_lid.. its a pain having a tank in the bedroom and i've had the same with my aro.. i moved the tank out of the room to the lobby with my other aros.. there is dull lighting through out the night in the lobby area(room light) though none of my tanks have any lights.. careful.. most aros develop drop eye cos of injury.. and my largest aro has it in one eye after he jumped onto the floor while cleaning.. i'd suggest you move them out and keep a light on at night, doesnt have to be tank light.. but a dull room light.. zero watts types..

Blue LED xmas lights... you'll need alot of them to light up a big tank, but they work good and are pennies to run. I used a staple gun to mount them into my wood canopy. Your aro will shine blue. :)
