Clown knife for sure is the cause. I had to get rid of mines because my aro was freaking out after the lights go out.

Try dropping the water a few inches. I've never had to use a moonlight on any of my aro's, but they do tend to freak out if the water level is too close to the top of the aquarium.
just a thought, but have you thought about the splashing being just the ck?...they like to surface and when they do the make a good splash and everything in the tank moves around from it...
