Arowana and Gars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi mate
Thats good to hear, sounds closer to my set up. I have a 9x4x2 high tank with 2 gars around 18" and thinking of adding a 16"+ aro.
I have 2 floridas and a hbrtg and they are fine together. My aro shows a little bit of aggression towards the gars and the gars are pretty passive. The gars are about 15 and 17" and the aro is about 19". My gars aren't at the surface very much though. They come up for air every now and again, but generally hang out mid level to the bottom level of the tank. They are in a 230 wide.

9x4x2!? That's a wicked size. I'm sure you can house them in that with no problem! Lol

But I guess it all really depends on the temperament of your gars and the aro that you get. I just got these gars not too long ago and they came from an 80 gallon and were with a couple of 3" opaline gouramis and they never touched them.

I would just suggest finding a large aro that is currently in a community tank. That should give you a good chance of getting a more "cooperative" aro.

My Asian HATES my red hook silver dollars, but ignores the other fish and let's the gars come to the surface with very few problems. I had to stop feeding the SD's floating pellets, because the aro was tearing them up when they came to the surface.

That'sinteresting. I think a lot of the time it comes down to fish temperament. One of my gars is docile, the other a bit more fiesty. I guess the only way to find out is to get an aro! It won't be for a while yet though, need to save some money up. I had a silver aro before with one gar and there were no issues. Both fish were about the same size.

i have had no issues with my gar and aros together.... i have 1 silver aro and 2 black aros and 1 florida gar and they get along just fine all over 20 inches

image.jpgI keep two silver aros 22 and 24" with a 17" Florida Gar without any issues. Gar actually
tries to keep up with the aros swimming, fights for his piece of shrimp during feeding and runs away with one so no one can take it away. So amusing to watch.

When I had my silver aro with my gars it was nothing but trouble. The aro was an aggressive eater and when he would smash the pellets it would always spook the gars so they would dart off sometimes smacking the glass. I ended up selling the aro as I didn't want my gars to get injured. I'm never going to keep them in the same tank again but my aro was an ass and fought with my pbass as well.
