arowana can see color?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats really intresting that you brought that up because I thought it was only my arowana fish that does that, people can walk past the tank no problem but if anyone wears red and walks past quickly it goes crazy and bashes itself up against the tank walls with fright.

They hate red for some reaon. Everytime they see red, they go beserk. Only exception is, i dont know why my chilis dont rip each other apart since they're all red. Any ideas anyone?

I put a white shirt in front of the tank and moved it around nothing. I put a blue shirt infront of the tank nothing. I put a black shirt infront of the tank. nothing. I put a RED shirt infront of the tank and it just runs back and forth slamming into the walls.

I do believe quite a few fish can see colour, though a different array to what we see. Many reef fish for example communicate via UV reflective patterns on their bodies, light that we obviously can't see. I think billfish too have been shown to be able to see colour.

I am curious however, as to why on earth arowana should freak out at the sight of red? Don't you guys feed them freeze-dried krill, which is red? Moreover, quite a few Asian Arowana are red, why don't they freak out at the sight of their own reflection, or when they see another arowana that IS red? Come to think of it, there was a member here who had a few clown loaches in with their aro, and their fin tips are also red.

So what's the go here, what's happening?

The examples you mentioned are all inside the tank and in small amounts. With my two silvers it has always been large amounts outside the tank i.e. orange bucket or red shirt/jacket.

BTW as a note, my black aro does not at all seem scared or even cautious regarding any colors.

my peacock bass hate blue or white, i walked into my room with a blue and white striped towel and they flipped out

How peculiar... I can't think how that would be an evolutionary advantage. So very strange...it just seems to prominent a behaviour for it to be a 'quirk'. There must be a reason why...
