Hello Everyone!

I was hoping for some advice on a aro set up I am looking to get in the near future. Not sure if a silver aro or a black aro ( cuz I love them both!) will be my choice and I will tell you why. I went to a reputable aquarium shop and bombarded him with questions! Everything from recommended size, recommended filters and yada yada yada.

I left there more confused than I ever have been! For the past 2 months I have been doing my research and found various ways to keep aro's happy. I've gone to local aquarium shops and asked questions. One person even told me a 75 gallon would be suitable for an aro. I didn't feel right with that advice!

Anyway...here is the latest confusion I've had (before I write a novel!) The aquarium dealer told me Black Aro's don't grow as big as silver aros. So a 90 gallon aquarium with 2 canister filters would do the job. I have 3 yellow lab cichlids currently and he had advised that they would not be good tank mates because the african cichlids require a much different PH range than the aro. Meanwhile the place I got the yello labs from told me they were perfect tank mates for Aros. He told me a silver aro would do good in a 125 gallon with 2 canister filters. He suggested south american cichlids as being good tank mates, I have a pleco now and he said a pleco would do fine with an aro.

I guess with all this info I would like some advice as to what would be appropriate for a silver or black aro set up? Any info would help! THANKS!

African cichlids do require differnt PH. But a lot of people here keep fronts with arows. A 125gal is alright but a 180gal would be better. A foot print of 8'x3'x2' would be good for a arow for a while. what canister filter you plan on getting? I got 1 FX5 and a fluvul 405 running on my 180. And as for the Black arow grows smaller....i never owned a black so i can't help you there.

I am not sure what filter it was as the man showed me three of them that would work nicely, I know one was a fluval. Now would a footprint of A foot print of 8'x3'x2' be for teh 125 or the 180?

Thanks so much for the help I truly appreciate it!

Well, a silver aro could grow to 40" in time so you'd need much large than a 125 after it'd out grown it! 300+ with plenty of turn around room. My silver is in with ca/sa cichlids with no issues, however i think there normally is problems with compatability on aggression from the cichlids towards the aro from what i've read on here. P-Bass are fine with them, and with the size of tank required for the aro, they'd fit nicely!

Aros have no issues with Plecos.

As for Black Aro's not growing as large, i'm not sure if that's true or not but i have a friend with one and it definatly requires more than 90gal! I did read somewhere that the silvers grow the largest/longest out of all the aros, blacks have a very similar body shape to them compared to asians or jars so can only assume that it's still going to break the 24" mark.

African cichlids do require different water conditions to SA fish, but never kept any myself so don't know what the differences are!

Hope that's of some help anyway.

The foot print of a 125gal is 6'x'18''x22'' and a foot print of a 180gal is 6'x2'x2'. wider is better, it gives the fish more room to turn around. 360gal is a foot print 8'x3'x2'.

a 180 is 6x2x2, 8x3x2 would be 360

LOL, have we scared you out of aro ownership? If you've got the space then can't recommend them enough, they will over time eat from your hand (then jump out and slap you round the face.............and just generally jump out of your tank if you give them even the smallest hole to try!)
