Well, a silver aro could grow to 40" in time so you'd need much large than a 125 after it'd out grown it! 300+ with plenty of turn around room. My silver is in with ca/sa cichlids with no issues, however i think there normally is problems with compatability on aggression from the cichlids towards the aro from what i've read on here. P-Bass are fine with them, and with the size of tank required for the aro, they'd fit nicely!

Aros have no issues with Plecos.

As for Black Aro's not growing as large, i'm not sure if that's true or not but i have a friend with one and it definatly requires more than 90gal! I did read somewhere that the silvers grow the largest/longest out of all the aros, blacks have a very similar body shape to them compared to asians or jars so can only assume that it's still going to break the 24" mark.

African cichlids do require different water conditions to SA fish, but never kept any myself so don't know what the differences are!

Hope that's of some help anyway.
Thanks so much that is really helpful info, I will start looking at 180 and above size tanks for my aro regardless if its silver or black. I'll probably post a wanted post for a used version of sorts.

Gonna have to really make this aro dream come true!!!! :)

LOL, have we scared you out of aro ownership? If you've got the space then can't recommend them enough, they will over time eat from your hand (then jump out and slap you round the face.............and just generally jump out of your tank if you give them even the smallest hole to try!)
Hahaha no I am not easily scared! I had a 200 pound Dogue De Bourdeaux that passed late January and now looking to have an aro and a nice aquarium set up. As a kid there was always aquariums at home, my first aro experience was my Dad's and he use to eat from my hand and follow me around when I passed the tank. Dad would say he liked me, Mom would say he wanted to eat me! LOL

After so many years my interest in them never waned. I just wanna make sure I have everything an aro would need for a long term happy life!

I'm looking at lfs stock tubs to get the required size and fitting a window in the side. Aros look good from the top too if it just ends up being a big blue 800gal pond (hope not.) Buying a complete glass tank at those sizes is crazy expensive! Best of luck.

Yeah I know monster tanks are expensive! I've already been researching 360 and up and almost fell out of my chair!

Craigslist is a hot spot for tanks.

If I were in your position and money was somewhat of an issue.... I would hunt for a 180g. first, 240g. if possible (but anything with a wider footprint of 24" would have first priority). It's always less work in the long run to get the tank that will permanently house the Arowana. I would invest in 1 if not 2 Fluval FX5 filters. After all that is established... I would then be on the hunt for a BLACK arowana. Silvers are a dime a dozen and get drop eye.... kinda looks a little creepy as they get larger. Or... I would wait til Infinate Aquatics (one of the forum vendor) gets black arowanas in and stockpile about 5 of them in your tank. They would look great!

Btw, those africans that were said to be good tankmates will be great tank mates and perspective food once they fit in the mouth of the arowana.

GL to you and look forward to hearing what you decide or choose to do.

I've owned few aro in my time but never Black. They do get large so i would look to get 240 gallon and nothing less becuase of the size they obtain, if you can get 360 they you will not have to worry later as the aro grows but i think 240 should be alright. For filters you have many options from wet/dry canister or 4 to 5 emporer 360. Most of the arfican cichlids are now bread locally so the water chemistry is not that big of a deal unless you got some F0 or F1. I would recommend larger cichlids that are like oscars since they then to swollow the food and not fin nip. Blood parrots and datnoids are other good option along with bass.

If you want a new tank Glasscage is good option.

Hope this helps.
