I just got a new 8" silver and the guy at the LFS said they feed them floating pellets. Its been 3 days and he wont take any of the cichlid gold pellets (I asked specifically if these would work and he claimed they would.) I know a LFS worker should never be trusted but I did and now I need some advice. What food should I try? I know they like crickets but I dont want to be buying live crickets all the time!

Well my friend some ppl get lucky to have a arowana eat pellets. Depends on what they been feeding them ever since. Arownanas are meat eaters and sooner or later if ever they will start looking for live food. I was lucky to have a florida gar eat pellets which saved me trips to the pet store for buying feeders.

You can try different foods to see what it likes. Each fish has it's own favorite foods. Cickets are basic. Personally I would do it, coz if you have holes in your tank, the crickets can escape out of the tank and you would have a problem. Try beefheart, live fogs (small), or other small insects other than crickets.

right now im gut loading the crickets with carrots to bring out the colors in my fish. Is the very pink coloration an adolescent thing? Or will it stay? I think I will be able to convert him over to pellet food but for now crickets turned out to be less of a hassle than I had thought.

anyone know on the coloration?

My 15" silver wont eat any floating pellets but he will eat pre cooked market shrimp meat and crickets and I hate buying crickets one or two always find their way out of the tank. try shrimp meat cheap and prawns also cheap and healthy.

Never had much luck getting aro's to eat pellets except the HBH soft krill and Oscar show and grow.

I would use those little feeder minnows in the beginning only 1 or 2 at a time while I was trying to wean mine off of live food..just little enough so they stay hungry but don't starve. I'd drop them in one at a time in the tank, so it would splash, wait till he hit the first one and then drop the second..next day minnow, then shrimp and so on ......now he hit's anything that I drop in the tank.....he watches me walk across the room waiting for what I'll drop in next..so far it's prawns, mussels, HBH oscar and krill pellets, meal worms, earthworms, chicken and no more rosies.......
