Hello all.

I have a young silver arowana about 7 inches long. I have had him about 2 months. He has had frayed fins since I got him. I thought he'd grow out of them.

He is fed FD brine shrimp, FD krill, beef heart, mealworms, self raised white clouds.

Water parameters; Water temp 78 - I will raise to 82, . I have hard water so PH is 7.6 with hardness above 280. My water from my water softener has a PH of 7.4 and hardness of 30. I've never used my soft water as my plants don't repsond well to it. water changes not enough 1x a month.

Currently he is housed in a 55 gallon tank with a bichir, 4 clown fish, a plecostomus, and varying numbers of white clouds. A 200 gallon tank awaits him - thats where the white clouds are being raised - Want him to be a little bigger so he does not get in the overflows on the sump before he gets the 200.

Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks Lee

Your arowana has fin rot. Likely causes are bad water parameters and stress. Personally I would increase the WCs to the point were nitrates are kept under 10ppm and add a tablespoon of aquarium salt per 5 gallons of water. Up the temp to around 84 degrees. You should see noticable improvement within a week or two. If not you may need to add meds

looks like he's been on the V05 ,,,

yeah agree with Bderick67 ,, it should clear up pretty quick if action is taken straight away ,,

i got a fish from a shop with shredded fins a while back ,and it would not get better ,, i did the melafix route and saw improvement and regrowth in 5 days ,

Your picture did not work. To post a new thread go to the desired forum and click the "new thread" button in the upper left hand corner above the thread titles list.

make sure water is clean.. change what if u haven't done it in a while.. that usually what happens...

dont think that just cuz your water looks CLEAR doesnt mean that its OK... cuz the ammonium level and nitrate will kick in..

yea do more water change, add salt

Thanks all, The arowana is looking better. Thats a lot of water chenges to keep the nitrates under 10. I read about an algae filter on the MFk site I'll have to look into that for the 200 gallon tank.
