I recently saw the local pet store selling a couple of small, 4 inch Silver Arowana Fish. I'm thinking of buying it - would it be okay with a 6 inch Florida Gar? Any ideas?

Thanks,

^^^LOL I think at the size theyre at now, it probably wouldn't work. Now, if you grow out the aro and put it in with the gar it may work. I know people on here succesfully keep aros and gar together. Right now I def see a 4" aro getting eaten.

I have a Silver Aro with Gars living peacefully for about 6 months..

I did some research before going for this combination and the general consensus is that the Gars will try to eat any silver fish if they can.

In my case, it's working because the Silver Aro has always been nearly twice of the size of the Gars and hence too big for the Gars to attack him. (And my specific Silver Aro is very very docile.)

(At the beginning (6 months), the Silver Aro was about 8"-10" and the Florida Gars were about 4". Now, the Silver Aro is closing on 18" and the FL Gars are over 12".)

In your case, the Gar is 6 inches and the Silver Aro is 4.. So, as the Gar is larger and will grow faster than the Aro, this combination will most probably not work.

In my opinion, with a larger (~10") Silver Aro, this combination will have much better chances of working in the long-term.

Good luck,
Sid

PS: Besides compatibility, there is the issue of tank-size. Absolute minimum 6'x2.5' footprint (220 Gal).. Ideal: 8'x3' footprint.

I have 2 florida gar that share a tank with silver aros without any problems. The key is to have the gar eating pellets (non-live) so they don't look at the aros as food. I added a 3rd gar (does not eat pellets) that came in larger than expected and he promptly ate the tail off of a silver. The damage is so severe I don't know if the aro is going to make it.

It can work, just make sure they are a compatible size and the gar eats non-live and you're good.

Aros are a bit fragile at that size. I had a 8in gar try and take down a16in aro. I would suggest getting a aro bigger than your gar. Gars have a bad habit of chewing on the tails of other fish.

Waited till my Banjar Red was a good 12" before i introduced a 6" Florida Gar.

He is s**t scared of the aro and stays well clear of him.

During feeding time as long as my Aro gets his fill, he does not mind the Gar chomping on shrimp and hikari sticks. But when the food is getting over, Aro chases him off and finishes off the last bits in leisure :)

Unless it is an african arowana or the gar/aro have been grown out together from small sizes then I say no.

I've kept blacks with gar successfully but only when i bought them both small and timed their growth rates as best I could.

Adding a new gar with the aro always led to aggression towards it.

ive had my silver with a gar for a few months now with no problems. My only concern would be size of the arow, my gar seems to leave everything alone that wont fit in its mouth

i got two gars a 14" florida/spotted and a 8" florida/spotted with one silver 12" and a 10" lei they live good together no one bothers each other.
