hi, im looking for any information on crossing between arowana species.
i know that there has been crossing within the formosus groups colours but i have never noticed any papers or even forum postings about crossing out with different species.

is this possible genetically and just the case that they dont take well to each other in a pond, has anyone tried it before?

apparently one of the reasons they may not allow asian arowana in Australia is the concern that they may cross with our jardini and cause an genetic threat to the population here.

also isnt cites concerend with crossing within the formosus group, say reds to goldens or dont they care.
any laws there to say its not to be done?

we have that law here for just about all fish.

any information at all is appreciated thanks.

Never heard of any other crosses, except Jar with Asians, BUT never saw this cross either...

thanks very much for the reply, i dont know how long you have been on this arowana site but im sure you wouldve heard something if a cross had been done.
i have never come across anything about that cross myself but haven been around so long. all ive ever heard is arowana crosses out with different colours.

i wonder if this was a reliable source that mentioned a jardini cross arowana.. or just some one thinking they had a cross - like a while back i saw someone suggest they had a guppy cross molly. i have never even heard of a jardini leichardi cross..
but i imagine that would be possible. maybe all of them are possible if mixing sperm with unfertilsed eggs in a bowl.

you think that it would be a unique thing and be worth something if someone had done it. sometimes people suggest they have a cross when funny body shapes show up but sometimes its just a genetic slurr outside from the normal look.

if you take a goldfish and cross it with a japanese koi you get a pretty dull short looking carp thing and they are infertile by most accounts i have read.
so if no one has acheived this jar/asian arow cross i guess we wouldnt even know if it would be fertile which would remove the ability to work on the genes down the line in future generations. i am thinking that cites would have a law against breeding arowana with others..it seems to me though that farms are already breeding asian crosses and are allowed becasue they are within the same species names.
however i also had sighted a newer system ( scientific names) for recognising the various colour types and river origins of the asain arowana. i wonder if that would then mean technically that the farms are not supposed to do crossing anymore.

That would be cool, like a silver/jardini.

your on here 2?:nilly: once I heard from a friend (who owns a lfs here) said that he was getting leichardti/silver cross. he showed me the list from an asia exporter but came in as regular silvers.

Naw, I'm not into hybrids.. Would prefer a "natural" strain.
You wouldn't want to pay for a gold that is cross with a jar, would you?
IMO keep it with it's kind for future generations to enjoy the "more simple things in life".

Just my five cents ;)
