mine was missing one of his for a few years...then one day he decided to slam his face into the gravel while going after a crayfish...he was pretty bloody and tore his nose up but over the next few weeks his barbel grew back, just a little crooked...i've heard you can cut into the area also to stimulate growth but don't think i would try it...
