Hello,

I'm planning na 990 liter aquarium (900 liters for fish, 90 is filter) size will be 220x75x60 (cm) and the 200x75x60 will be the fish location (the 20 cm will be the filter).

I'm pretty sure that this is how the aquarium will look, my question is:

Will this be enough space for silver arowana? I cannot go for bigger tank, so this is the max. size tank that I will have.

Tankmates will be 2 oscars, 8 silver dollars and 2 bottom dweller fish (max 10 inch ie. 25cm, probably synodontis family)

With this fish/tank setup, what do you think the regular water chance will be? weekly 30%? more, less?

Feeding:

I'm planning on quality hikari or other company pellets specialized for this fish (floating pellets) daily + frozen crickets and i can feed the grown up arowana with prawns later on. Basically no live fish food. (Can buy fish meat in the supermarket and chop it up tho)

my girlfriend is against live feeding, so i cannot do anything about it XD

Here's a diagram of how it will look.

Size will be fine for Jardini or Asian, too small for Silvers or Blacks.

That setups crying out for a jardini ;)
On a serious note though the Oscars won't last long and the sd's future could come to a stressful end with a jardini tank mates are always a gamble with jars (bottom dwellers obviously do better)

Hello, thank you for the reply. Could you please tell me what size would be good for an adult silver? Obviously a pond :D but I mean what is wrong with this AQ size, is it too short? or not enough gal? I can't go over 1000 Liters (270G) But i can fiddle with the stats for example go for 270 cm in theory in width (20cm still used for filter, so 250 cm left for swimming) x 65 cm depth would have to be lowered by 10 cm from 75 x 60 cm height still the same.

Ideally i would go for something arond 1500 liters - but i cannot due to restrictions of my house.

What tankmates would you suggest for a jardini? I just checked the local shops they have a jardini arowana listed - but not available meaning they can get me one probably if i inquire. cost-wise it's around 40$ so same like the silver.

It would be sad to have only 1 fish (even if it's an Aro) in such big tank.

thank you.

Tank mates are an always an option in my opinion I've kept jardini for ten years and never kept one solo , yes I've lost a lot of nice fish through trail and error but always end up with a reasonably balanced tank in the long run ;)
Decent sized catfish are a good place to start I've had plenty of success with irwini and Niger especially they are both gentle armour plated giants , cats such as rtc and tsn get way to big to quickly so risk your aro being bitten or eaten until late it hits decent size.
All my jardini have also left Birchir well alone they never seem to get bitten (possibly due to slime coat) or even acknowledged most of the time.
Cichlids can work out but you need one tuff cookie such as a jag but they'll be plenty of fighting for territory between them to the point one dies or has to be rehoused ,like I said trial and error all depends on the individual jardini attitude and what level of aggression it holds as there all aggressive lol
As for the price $40 sounds good for a 4-6" one, what size are they available in at that price ?

2-3 inches only for jardini. The silvers are commonly sold in here in various sizes tho.
From what you say, that kind of fish is not for me unfortunately, also my GF would not be able to take the fighting of the fish xD so it's a no-no for jardini as it seems. back to the question, what do I need to do with the tank in proportions.. to be able to house an adult silver?

cheers

Yeah my Mrs hates the jardini agro too :)
Adult silvers get 3ft so your tank width has to be big enough for them to turn so 3ft + and 8ft long plenty of people keep silvers in tanks to small but it usually ends in poor health or aro jumping out in distress

The size you suggest is around 1300 liters and that is above my limit by 300 liters :D

If it was up to me and not the company that builds my house i would go for 300x90x70 + sump filter below the aquarium. But unfortunately that is not gonna happend and I have to be happy with the 1000 liter xD (the house is standardized and i cannot do any major changes unless i wanna pay more $ and i cannot afford it, it's expensive enough as it is)

How long does a properly (pellets, prawns, filets, crickets etc) fed arowana take to reach 27-28" ?
Everyone says they start growning more slowly after 14-15"

I'm thinking if the period of growth is in years ( at least 3 or more) i could sell it when it gets to the size of "time to upgrade tank or move to pond" and get a new one & repeat (the size being the deoth size of AQ ie 75 cm) . It's just an idea.. not sure if good one.

You shouldn't really but fish that need rehoming in the long run (not that I've not done it myself;))
I've never kept a silver long term myself I've only ever owned one that got nailed by a cichlid years ago , then I discovered jardini fell in love and kept them ever since lol

What Evz said^^^, I personally wouldn't purchase a fish you knew you had to re-home especially if you dont plan on upgrading. It can be pretty hard to find homes for 2ft+ fish. Who wants to give a away a fish they grew attached to and raised anyway?!

I also have only had Jars, so I personally cant speak from experience, but I dont think its unheard of for silvers to reach 24" within 12-18 months, they grow quite fast.

With all that said, I would just get something you know you can house long term. Jars can be aggressive, but some end up being friendly, or tough bottom dwellers like bichirs work well. Asains are alot more community friendly if you arent in the U.S.
