Arowana or not? New tank in planning.

Hey guys, thanks for the input.

Had a talk with the company. They said a bit more would not hurt so i fiddled around with the sizes and I think i could go for 245x80x60 (8'-2.6'-2') which would be 317 gal, still there would be the filter.. but that's only 20cm of lenght so still 220+ for swimming.

From what i've read all around the net this should be enough, what do you guys think. Also remember it's meant for silver, which even at 3 FT should be able to turn comfortably there since it turns in U shape.

I will have the well water available in the room (50 cm from the AQ) so i will be able to do easy water changes whenver i want so i can keep the no3 under 20 ppm.

I'm not here to convince you of what to buy, it seems like you have made your decision. Those dimensions are better than a lot of Silvers will see, but I still wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

Here is a video from a member on here, a 450g and the Silvers make it look tiny!

Hello,

I've seen that tank! I like it, especially the wood/plants.

It has 244x91x76 cm it's very tall. That's where you get the extra gallons. I'm most probably gonna build a 225x90x60 (uless i change the size 10 more times again.. :D ) and unlike him I plan on 1 aro.

Cheers

You need foot print, not height to keep a silver, mine is just over a year old and has grown to 50cm in length. I keep it in a 3.6m 500g tank and at the rate it's growing I think my tank may become too small. Keep it with fish that occupy the mid to lower levels if the tank and you'll be ok, cats, loaches, poly's all work well

I have one more question for you guys as you have lots of experience with Jaridnis, how does a Jardini behave with a ray? Lets say a motoro. Does it still bother / attack / annoy a ray that big?

If i were to discard the idea of oscars/silver dollars/catfish and just go for a single jardini and single motoro for life, any input on that?

Cheers

Not to sound like a broken record, it really depends on the fish. A Jardini certainly has the capability to kill a ray if he wanted to. I personally keep mine with Bichirs and armored catfish, not that he bothers them anyway. Thats something you will have to evaluate for yourself.

I think its important to note, while im not a ray guy, I think most enthusiasts recommend a 3' wide tank for most larger species of rays, such as Motoros.

Like owens said it does depend on the jar , my first jar I owned was a pyhco killer so I never risked it when I lost that one I bought a motoro and did plan on eventually risking it with my second jar that was more passive , but unfortunately I lost the ray to an unexplained case of death curl so I never got to house them together and see what the outcome was :(
My main concern was the jar biting the rays disc as it surfaced on the glass and the other was the ray tagging the jar when doing so.
I will try this again one day soon when I get chance to get another ray but only with a jardini that's not a complete pyhco killing machine lol
