If it is a glass rubber, even moving to a proper sized tank may not help.
 
could be poor water conditions where rashes develop which are red in colour and vanishes once water is changed. also pl keep your water in the tank conditioned.

Too true. Mine's a "glass rubber." Even after I upgraded into a much larger tank, he would still rub his snout non-stop. Eventually the barbels become all limped and deformed. I suggest upgrading (simply because you're going to have to anyways), and then buying a whole bunch of plastic plants the same height as the new tank, and then planting them along the sides and back (usually it's the sides the aros rub against). Make it a few plants deep. Usually, they see the plants and turn back without rubbing their snouts against the glass.
