I was wondering what level pH is good for an arowana. Also I do not want to feed it feeders b/c i heard if feeders are sick then arowana can get sick. I'm probably just gonna try to feed him crickets, superworms, and pellets. I was wondering if it would b safe to buy crickets from a fishing bait and tackle store instead of somewhere like pet smart. One last question, I want to put driftwood w/plants on it. Will driftwood n plants lower my pH level too much?
Sorry for all the questions.. I'm a newbie. Thx for the help

good luck.....one more thing good tight lid on top of the tank....

My PH is at 7.0 all the time and the Aro is fine and dandy. I use a Neutral buffer to keep it stable though.

I have feeders in my tank and he doesn't care less. He loves shrimp and worms.

I keep LOTS of driftwood in my tank.

hello..
excuse my reply, but

if the feeders are sick, it wouldnt make your aro sick, i used to think the same, but alot of local shops showed me what they feed their fish while in the store, it turns out its the sick/ dying feeders, that are unsellable. the only reason why i dont like to feed my aro sick feeders is i dont like introducing whatever that fish might have to my water.

ph question, honestly i havent checked ph in my tank since i got my new jardinis, and they are healthy! local pet stores (not those big petco like companies) have told me the trick in keeping good/ perfect water enviroment for my aros, and other tropical fish WITHOUT spending alot of money on all those chemicals, is to have a constant water change, 10-25% every mt, or at least 6 weeks. the perfect ph for them is the ph of tap water. also with this constant water change you really dont ever have to worry about ammonia poisoning, coz the waters always cleansing. dont ever do a water change more than 40% unless necessary, doing this will eliminate alot of the GOOD BACTERIA.
Also when doing a water change.. JUST MAKE SURE TO PUT WATER COND IN THE NEW WATER YOUR ADDING. EG: if your changing up to 20 gallons, just cond that 20 gallons your putting in, and make sure the water you put is warm (NOT TOO COLD, NOT TOO HOT.. try to get as close to your current water temp, This prevents you from getting ICH in your tank)

the few things i advice you to buy:

5 gallon bucket (you can buy at petco or something)
gravel vaccum (helps alot with water change)
Water cond (removes chlorine, ETC.)
ICH CHEMICAL (just in case)
a bottle of CYCLE (promotes good bacteria, and speeds up the nitrogen cycle)

Why, because it might make your fish sick? So basically the introduction of sick/diseased feeders would make your aro sick, right?

10-25% water change every 4-6 weeks is not enough to keep nitrate levels at healthy levels.

Water changes have very little to do with removing ammonia and will not prevent damage to your fish from ammonia, this is done by have a sufficient amount of biological filtration.

In your aquarium only a very very small percent of the beneficial bacteria is free floating. Doing large water changes 50-90% will not hurt or deplete your "good Bacteria". Be sure to treat the water for chlorine, it will destroy the beneficial bacteria

10-25% water change a month or 6 weeks? Wow that should be weekly or bi-weekly for that amount of water being changed.

Now i dont' keep arowana's but with how expensive and fragile they can be at the smaller sizes <12"(less than 12 inches). I'd do atleast a 50% once a week maybe more depending on tank size, smaller growout vs largest tank for life.

So if its safe to feed it sick feeders.. can i buy crickets that people use for fishin instead of going to petsmart? Thx for all the help.. hopefully i can keep my aro alive
