Arowana stunted?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah I agree with Chizzle. I don't have an Arow but hope to get one was going to feed it Carni sticks and market shrimp. He should continue to grow in your 225.

WHAT!?!??
20" in two years normal? Try 24" in the first year. Growth slows after 16"!?!? Try they hit a growth spurt at 16".

Man....what is mfk coming to. All this "I have read" or I have heard" bs. Try "from my experience".

Op, most likely your arow is stunted, but still be able to get a couple more inches out of him/her. Being stuck in a small tank could decrease the arows life span though. As stated above, pellets and a vary of food is great. I'm my experience, it won't take long. A week or two weeks tops. Silvers aren't that picky of eaters.

They don't grow 24" in a year unless they're in a huge tank to begin with and fed properly. You seem to be overlooking the fact that I attributed it to poor nutrition. A 20" fish will not be stunted in an 18" depth tank for a short period of time. Take a chill pill and use common sense before you post about the quality of comments on MFK.

they go crazy for live crickets, which you could supplement into his diet as a treat every now and then

What is the minimum size tank for an Arow? I'm like the OP and have a 220 and would like to get one but was told by some it could work and others it wouldn't. What do you guys think?

220 won't work for life. At minimum you would need a tank about 8x3. And that's bare minimum.

*sigh*
So I guess "the fish only grows to the size of there tank"....right? And yes, arows do grow 24" the first year regardless if its in a 18" or a 24" wide tank. IME

No. At some point the fish will be stunted. I'm not saying a 125 gallon tank is acceptable, but the slow growth of the fish could be attributed to the smaller tank size and the lack of proper nutrition. Doesn't mean the fish is "stunted" because he grew slowly because of his environment and diet. He'll easily get another few inches out of the fish in the 225 but it's going to outgrow it in about 3 months.

Silver arowana grow at an average rate of 1-1.5" per month. This grow rate is to the 24-25" range not 16". From that point on the growth in length slows dramatically but they do add much more bulk.

For a 2 y.o. silver yours is a little small. Just care for it and don't worry about the growth, most likelly it will continue to grow(with proper care).

Be prepared to upgrade sooner rather than later (I'd say a 300 wide 96"x36" minimum), their growth rate is astounding, that is of course if the fish is not stunted; although I do not believe from the OP's that this is the case; just malnourished.

My silver actually averaged right around 1.5" a month, I lost her to a jump at 22'" last month (bought her around 6-7" or so in December) and the diet I had her on was no where near as good as some of the guys and girls on this board.

It will continue to grow for sure. A friend of mine raised a silver arowana from 4 inches all the way to 32 inches in a 75 gallon. It took only 3 years. He fed it everyday and changed water every day. Sad but true. If you put it in a pond, it will explode.
