So we all know that aro's are jumpers. What do you use as a tank cover? I'm currently using egg crate with much success as far as keeping the aro IN the tank. However I have noticed that when the aro jumps into the egg crate he sometimes cuts his face up on the sharp edges. This worries me because the bigger they get the more powerful the jump will be and potentially more injury too. Do any of you have a better "open air" (i.e. no glass) tank cover option?

Thanks!

i dont keep aro but you could alsways buy the glass lids or if they scare you ...you can go to a local hardware store and get plexi glass cut to fit...and if you want more air to get through just have them put holes in it via drill etc......most people still have to put something on top of that to hold them down...but you could always go with pretty rocks or something eye pleasing to weigh down the lid.i could deff see how egg crate would cut up a fish face...deff ty the plexi its also pretty cost effective...

any particular reason why you want open air?

you could try a synthetic windo screen material. might have to make frames for it and put a couple braces throughout, but it should work

i use HEAVY glass lids. i got them at my LFS, and craig does "clients" tanks with aros. they work great.

i use like 3 pound acrylic tops with like air holes lol

Any pics for reference?
I'm using 1/4" glass and as heavy as it is, i still wanna upgrade in the near future.

yeah me too i prefer open air because of condensation due to the lights and also i noticed that when fully covered with glass lids, when i open, the air smell bad, as if it has been closed too much longer. i use nets. i think its better because it can stretch when the aro jumps and it wont hurt itself =]

I use 2inch plastic shelving from Home Deps.....cheaper than eggcrate and stronger. You can also use velcro to hold down the lids which looks better than a bunch of weights or rocks on top of your tank.

The fish may bust itself up a little if he trys jumping but its usually just superficial and heals w/in a week or two.
