understand now.....

you must keep in mind i am sitting here at home with outside temps around 0 degrees F right now. there is no way i could ever even imagine trying open air tanks.

i do hope you have heat inside the house though.. we keep the house at 68-70degF and a few aquarium heaters and a temperature controller takes care of the aquarium and keeps it between 83-87degF.

My current lid is entirely eggcrate, and I have my filter outputs aimed at the surface of the water. I don't run any airpumps and believe in good oxygen exchange as part of a healthy tank. Thus, no glass or acrylic for me.

Ok you want a tank cover that's strong enough to hold in a jumpy arowana but won't cut him up and is breathable right? I have the perfect solution.

ok I guess no one liked my joke. I thought of it long before this thread actually when my former Silver broke my tank lid. I was thinking that if only there was some type of covering that would hold him in when he jumps but wouldn't hurt him.....like panty hose material lol. I was going to post my idea at the time but figured everyone would think it was lame lol. oh well, later gators.
 
lol i thought of taht too but doesnt look appealing and it could possibly rip through unless you use some heavy tarp

I use 2inch plastic shelving from Home Deps.....cheaper than eggcrate and stronger. You can also use velcro to hold down the lids which looks better than a bunch of weights or rocks on top of your tank.

The fish may bust itself up a little if he trys jumping but its usually just superficial and heals w/in a week or two.
