Arowanna killer

Igor eats one to two crickets in the morning before I go to work. My wife occasionally comes home in the afternoon and feeds him another one. I went out to the porch light last night with a net and scooped up a bunch of little bugs of sorts. He happily went around scarfing them up. Wife found this particularly exciting. She loves her baby. NOW, The others lasted about two weeks before death spiral. This is no time to celebrate. This guy is definately the most aggressive and successful hunter I've had though. Starting to get slight nitrite readings now. I understand this is normal. Plants convert nitrates to nitrites. Water change tonight so they'll likely disappear. Second filter is a bit noisy. It may quiet down after a few weeks, I think I'll get a new one though. I'd send pics but my $300.00 sony digital camera fell off the boat two weeks ago. The camcorder I have isn't so great with close-ups.

nice to hear the fish doing great..pic would be nice :)
anyway just want to straighten the water you have..i hope u mean its nitrate not nitrite :)
nitrite is the magic converting to nitrate..nitrate is pretty harmless to fish up to certain number while nitrite is the deadliest of all, even more toxic then ammo to the fish.

NH4 ammonia--->nitrites----->nitrates=plant food. Lady at fish store who tested the water said," nitrites are extremely low, that's a good thing. Over all my tank water is ideal." Possibly I misunderstood. Last time they said no nitrites, no nitrates, no ammonia. Water's perfect. Got lot's of plants.

Hmmmm..... Igor has developed quite a taste for flakes. He still eats a cricket here and there, but throw some flakes in there and he goes around scooping them up. He's keeping his weight up, and appears quite content.

On a lighter note. Walleye on Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair are jumping in the boat. Muskie's are extremely active on St. Clair too. Surf and turf tonight baby.

Arowana's shrink back in fear when I enter the pet store. I've Killed six already. I have stopped for now, but will kill again soon.
I have all kinds of fish. Red tail cats, Oscars, other ciclids (yes, angels).I have polypterus, loaches, barbs, tetras, Red tail sharks, bala's, rainbows, smallmouth bass, poximids. I have a few.
My fish are healthy. Their tanks are clean. Their amonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are < measurable.
So why do I kill arowanas?????
I tried different temps. 78, 80, 85.
This is what happens. They are fine for a week or two. Then for no apparent reason. they quit eating.
DEAD IN ONE TO THREE DAYS
I did manage to revive one by force feeding it, but a week later the death cycle started again.
STOP ME BEFORE I KILL AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

hehe - that was a coool dialogue i heard.

I'll have to get a new camera to take some pics. Might have to thin out plants a bit too. I'll wait till he gets a bit bigger. He's still only about 3 inches. The Red Tail Cat in my kitchen tank is growing like mad. When I got him he was the smallest in the tank. Now he dwarfs everything. Oscar and senegalis are getting nervous. I may have to start work on the indoor pond sooner than expected. Getting advice from Lou's Pet Shop in Grosse Pointe on the build. They have a bit of experience with RTC and arowanas. Check out videos on Youtube. Their aro eats full grown rats, three times a week. I have concrete slab in family room w/porcelin tile. Sliding door near by for conveinient water changes. I'm thinking six hundred gallons w/small waterfall. I'll have glass sides, with a 12 inch rail. That should keep him from landing out side the tank should he jump. Probably use the smse wet/dry system they use. It cost them lest than my canister filters cost me. Can't start work till September so, this RTC needs to slow up a bit. he he ....
