Our bigger 2ft+ ARTC hides all the time in the 25K gal making it senseless to keep it there. I should have heeded Fishman Dave Fishman Dave 's accounts.

From YT:

WilliamZenger: My foot long ARTC stays in his hollow log all day, coming out to snatch a nightcrawler that I drop in for him. It's a shame, since they are a beautiful catfish. My black devil cat is the complete opposite. He stays on the side of the tank where I sit,in my chair eye level to him. He is completely unphased by me and will follow my hand around the tank. IMHO, there is more variation with black devils, in terms of whether they hide ot not. Almost every ARTC that I've seen is ALWAYS trying to hide.

TBTB: Thank you for this useful input. It made me think of all the wyckiis we kept, about 6 or so, and you are right, some of them hid all the time while others didn't claim any particular hides and stayed often in the open or semi-open. Strange. The prior ARTC we had that grew to 3ft never had an opportunity to hide but now that I think back it might have been less than comfortable in a bare tank. The current two ARTC hide always given an opportunity.

When I closed the pond down last month due to a wall collapse I found that I still had two Asian red tails hiding between the two pond liners despite me regularly searching for any.
Every art I have ever owned has hidden this way, yet I agree, the wickii seem hit or miss. Mine grew up in a tank and whilst it had a hide, it didn’t really hide away, but when it went in the pond, it went straight behind the liner.
