Article on Hybrid Fish

I don't think anyone would willingly put a mixed fish out to a LFS for sale.. well not most people. And if they did, they'd probably say it was a mix, and I'm not sure if the LFS would take it to sell unless they had a "misc" tank. Generally.

Personally, I'd want to breed a single species to be the most colorful, healthy, vibrant and looking structurally/possibly coloring - closest to the wild fish, if it exists in the wild.

On the same note, if it's an accepted breed, I think I'd want to breed it close to the way it should look.

That said, I think as long as you are educated about the breed of fish (diseases etc.) just like any other animal (you don't breed two cats or dogs prone to a certain disease together) and you aren't deceitful about what type of fish it is, should you have to give it up, I've got no problem with hybrids. It's actually kind of exciting to see what you might get - but I'd hope people are aware of the breed's problems. What might be interesting is to breed fish to better withstand the aquarium environment and get along with certain types of fish, possibly be cleaner, more hardy fish. I'd have no problem with that at all :) But for the people who want to know what breed of fish they have, random hybrids that have no purpose ought to not get mixed up with the fish we already know about. That also happens with other animals and it's happened to us with one of our dogs!

I think the rules of hybridization for fish should be just like that for dogs and cats. Once one becomes popular (like the flowerhorn) name it. Keep track of the breeds that make it. Why wouldn't anyone want to be proud of the lineage of their fish - and if you aren't, mutt. It really shouldn't be that hard. Figure out who the reputable breeders are - who the reputable LFS's are. Buy from them or be burned, like any other animal.

I think this argument is so odd (though I'm new to fishkeeping) The dog/cat owners don't seem to have this issue, and really they have just as many mutts/mixes. AND dangerous ones too with diseases too!

To wrap up: I'm okay with hybrids and having LFS sell hybrids listing them as that - I'm not okay with buying a hybrid expecting a somewhat pure fish.

I think a misperception is that wild fish have the best aesthetic characteristics that hobbyists could ever want...and that inbreeding or hybridization dilutes these characteristics.

Skilled selective breeding and hybridization in fact can have the opposite result: exageration of aesthetic characteristics desired by hobbyists.

"purists" claim that any hybrid they see is the ugliest abomination in the world and that the keeper is a monsterous sadist with a god complex for keeping it.

in reality though, if they were told that it was a rare new species never seen before, they would be drooling ready to pay tons of money to get one of these "natural miracles". :screwy:

There was a thread in the CA/SA forum not too long ago about a local ma and pa shop that was selling suspected hybrids as new species. (I forget who posted it... balton maybe? Can't remember.) I mean the guy was not only misleading his customers, but he was actually making up scientific names.... WTF?! Lol. So anyway, my point is, yes, people will willingly sell hybrids. Some people will do anything to make a dollar.

I wouldn't put it past the same people to sell "pure" fry of one species as "pure" fry of another (rarer) species... or farmed fish as "wild"...

The problem is unethical / irresponsible people... and not the existence of or sale of hybrids or other "fancy" fish.
