One MAJOR problem with having a hybrid fish is owner responsibility... Lets face it... There are some idiots in this world who wouldn't even think twice about tossing their unwanted fish (hybrid or not) into public waterways. This IMO is the true concern with hybrids. Selling hybrids and not knowing wtf kind of fish you even have is one thing... It's when these idiots toss their hybrids into warm lakes and streams and the survive and reproduce with pure fish that becomes a problem. This is the only valid reason I can see for purists to hate on our beloved Flowers...

Once again, I agree. Although I'll say that I think that a pure non-native species would be more of a threat to native waters for this reason; A pure specimen is more likely to be able to populate and take over a habitat than is a hybrid that is possibly sterile. Hybrids are probably going to be more aggressive and territorial on the whole, but their ability to reproduce with each other isn't always smooth, correct? - This is probably a good thing though...

But overall, owner responsiblity is the big problem.

I say let people breed away!Any of us who have kept cichlids/fish long enough and are strongly opinionated in the hybrid topic should be educated enough to tell a hybrid from a purebreed at any given time.I see hybrids everywhere but i still have all the purebreed cichlids that I want in my tanks. If i see a hybrid that I like,I buy it,if I don't like it,pass. No sweat off my b@lls and there shouldn't be any off yours...

I agree, but the good looking FH's and BP's aren't just attracting veteran fish keepers, they are catching they eye of beginners too. I'm sure there are thousands of people who have bought a BP or a FH as their first fish, or maybe their first cichlid..... these folks are not as educated and as experienced as most of the people in this forum.

Guys, this is exactly what I've been looking for, great feedback so far! Keep it coming please!

something are just not meant to be, ppl should stop playing gods and throw these ugly beasts with the carbage where they belong!

If the only reason for your oppostion to hybrids is that they are ugly, then I don't think anyone here is going to take you seriously.

Most hybrid cichlids are fertile, just not all of them. Blood Parrot and few FH stains can't reproduce each other but they can reproduce to other species. Ex. female BP X male Red Devil. But most FH are very fertile in both sexes.

Maybe true, but I still believe a pure non-native species is more threatening for the same reasons. Even if a hybrid 'species' is able to spawn and raise fry, the number of healthy viable fry will be lower than the number of healthy viable fry a pure pair would spawn. Of course, this is just my opinion. :)

Hybrids are highly natural, you can find hybrids in the wild too. For example, green x bluegill sunfish hybrids are common, you can find some wild duck hybrids such as mallard x wood duck cross from time to time. Theres a report of grizzly x polar bear hybrid shot by a hunter few years ago. None of these hybrids are made by people.

BP and FH, on other hand are made by people and they are mighty popular fish around aquarium trade. They are stay here for forever. Do you know most angelfish, discus, guppies, mollies, platies, bettas and swordtails are already hybrids in your average LFS?
