I'm underway in a livebearer breeding project with no results. since i have a certain time frame it is possible i might need to use Artificial Insemination. Now has anyone done this to any species of fish with results?
I have done it with egg layers on a few occasions with terrible results (maybe 10-20% survival rate). I think with the type of insemination we're dealing with, this would be even harder. If you really want to know my methods shoot me a pm, but trust me when I say that this is a totally not an easy way to go.
I helped my brother do it, he used to run a hatchery. He kept the male restrained in a small pan of water and extracted the milt from him with a very fine syringe (no he wasn't stressed, he was anesthetized). That's the only part I ever helped with but I believed he used a more natural method for getting the females to lay and then fertilized in petri dishes.
umm my project has a time line so if i dont have results by mide next week this is my last resort. i need to take out the main, use an anestedic to calm him down will keep in him in a damp cloth. what you do is put the fish belly up, raise his anal fins so it is roughly 180 degres to the ground then gentally run your fingers down his sides from the head to the base of the tail and the sperm should just come out(im hoping). Then you take to female and inject the sperm into he genital hole and Boom hopfully you made a mother platy.
theres a chance one of my females may be pregnent, ive been weighing her every other day now and its possible shes about to give birth so i dont know.....we'll see
