As If I Don't Have Enough Projects - Pond Construction

So you're only going to do 2 feet deep, except at one end? How large an area will be 3 feet deep?

Sorry, that sentence just has me totally confused...

See post 8, but even with that I don't think I made myself clear. Before I dug today, it was only 11' long and 5' wide. I started digging an additional 3' of length to make it 14' long. I'm debating on the 7' width and 24" depth since the gf reminded me that the deeper water would allow the fish to cool off better on the hot days. I may stick with 6' width and 30" deep. I'll see as the week progresses. I'm tired of digging. I want to put the liner in and fill it...

Is this just a temp. (2-3 yrs.) pond then?

When it gets consumed, will that same spot become a larger, deeper pond?

In the south, the extra depth will benefit the fish....

Ok, that makes a LOT more sense :grinno:.

To tell the truth, when I was diggin my pond, it was supposed to be 13'Lx6'Wx3'D. Somehow during the digging it got to 15'Lx7'Wx~4'D. I'm not sure I would have noticed the difference between 6' and 7' wide, but the extra depth (I think) has made a lot of difference.

If you have have to choose between the extra width and extra depth, go for the depth. It will be easy enough to widen it later. But once you've had a couple thousand gallons of water sitting on the bottom to pack it down nice and firm, it will be a little harder to dig out the bottom deeper...

I opted to go to 30" which is the max using the free liner my friend gave me. I started digging in the bottom after I finished the rough in of the 14' length. Still lots more digging and shaping to do. I forgot to take pics the day before, but will take some pics tonight of yesterday's progress.

Do you have much in the way of roots to deal with? I know I did... we had to use an axe as much as we were using the shovels...

from the looks of it no, but clay is it's own challenge. I found with my pond that anythign up to 18 inches was easy then below that the pick would only take up it's width worth which 10 timed the amount of swings needed to clear the same area.

from the looks of it his is similar. from there I say go until you run out of energy, then go some more. And seriously get a pick as the shovel is almost useless in hard clay. besides a pick is agreat way to work off the frusterations of your 4300g indoor project
