As promised, pics of my Alligator Snapper

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
great babies..get it eating dead food while they're babies...entice them with the food on tweezers. small slices of FW fish, small shrimp with shell so they get something hard to chew on and go lightly on the mammalian and avian protein.

every once in a while put in alive fish for it to "ambush"

enjoy

by the way, it will never behave like a "snapper". it has nothing to do with the commons, it won't follow you and try to bite you. it will tend to stay put in one place.

I cant wait till he starts acting like a snapper lol. He shows no interest in even my finger so far. I wanted to let him bite me once just to see if it hurts.
it will hurt.lol

i agree, it wont chase you around like a common. they like to sit and wait for prey to come to them. when mine was that small it was fed insect, worms, rosies, reptomin, and trout chow. why feed it chicken breast? as it gets larger i would keep it on worms, reptomin, trout chow, and shiners. and when it gets even larger, thawed out fish, thawed out rodents, night crawlers, crayfish, and trout chow. mine lost interest in trout chow and reptomin at about 13-14 inches, i think they were to small. now mainly eats fish fillets, fish i catch and freeze, frog legs from the sea food place, and crayfish with occassional thawed out rodents. mine grew fast with this kind of diet and water temps around 80-82. it was 13 inches at 3 yrs old. it slowed down after that. at almost 8 now he has a 17-18 inch shell length. you will need a large enclosure or tank. i went with a 300 gallon rubbermaid stock tank.

Awesome little turtles, I am interested to see how you will deal with multiple monsters!

ewurm, the smaller was for his friend so he only has one ally snapper....

when i got mine it was being kept with 2 others of similar size and they were nipping on each other. definately not good with other alligator snapping turtles or with any other turtle for that matter

Great turtles. Make sure you quarantine your feeders or breed your own, parasites are a big issue with live food, and taking that thing to the vet for treatment could be a lot of hassle.
