As promised, pics of my Alligator Snapper

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How did you get him to eat things other than feeders? Mine doesnt seem smart and his hunting skills suck. If I put him in a smaller container with food he gets scared and shows no interest in the rosies. If i hold one in front of his face he gets scared and swims away.

whats your tank set up? water temp? when mine was small i had him in a 20 long with gravel and water temp around 80-82. i had water just deeper then the width of his shell (in case he flipped over). i had floating plastic plants and some larger rock for him to hid. you just got him so he is still getting use to his enclosure. idk, i didnt have any trouble. he would see them floating and go get them. try presoaking them and letting them sink or maybe try getting some of those sinking pellets. i would maybe not try feeding for a couple days anyways, just let him get use to his new home. no handleing! rosies are good to feed. try worms and insects also. stay away from goldfish

Right now its a 10 gallon, filled about 1 inch from the top w/a floating dock and a plastic plant floating. He doesnt seem to like the bottom of the tank much. The 30 gallon is setup with about 5 inches of water and a big piece of driftwood in the middle that sticks out of the water, I just wanted him to start eating before I put him in a bigger enclosure.

id move him into something more shallow......they like to just stretch their necks up to breath......empty the ten gallon until its just deeper then the width of his shell. water depth might be stressing him out... plus making it hard for him to chase down food. mine liked to stalk its prey and corner it in the tank. with the water being so deep the fish are easier to escape.

Yeah, you didnt use a filter for the tank when he was small? I would imagine right now he isn't producing much waste. So far 2 rosies and 10-12 tiny minnows are unaccounted for, and they aren't in the filter lol. I guess he's gettin the hang of things. Maybe I will empty the tank down some. When they get older, don't they usually hang out in deep water?

yeah, i had an eheim filter for a 10 gallon when he was littler.....as i upgraded tanks i went with a larger eheim. in the 300 gallon stock tank i use a pond master 1250 for a filter.

YEah I think I am gonna move him to the 30 gallon once he is almost done with the minnows and rosies in his 10 gallon. Right now the tank is only about 5" deep in the 30 gallon, I'll keep it as shallow as possible while still being able to run the internal filter.

Snapper are generally not found in deep water... Like phantom said just enough for them to stretch and poke their nose out of the water. If you want try growing some duckweed in the tank to provide a little shade/protection to make him feel more secure w/ his surroundings.
