The Hoplias Aimara and the Macrophthalmus are the same sp.
(Pellegrin, 1907) caught the same sp. in F. Guyana very near the same spot Valenciennes did in Cayenne F. Guyana in 1846
Pellegrin's did not know of Valenciennes earlier discovery at the time. So the name mac should not be used only Aimara should be used since its the older of the 2 names.
Both of the original specimens are here today in France at the natural history museum. Both have been studied and both are exactly the same species. An ichthologist who made this discovery a couple of years ago. Is publishing his thesis here shortly, and once it hits print, changes in the books will follow. As far as monsters sizes in the hoplias family. There is only 2...Aimara and Lacerdae....One easy way to tell an Aimara from Lacerdae is the black spot on the opercle membrane.
