I see that there are usually asian Aros for sale on Aquabid, lots of them in California. I see they usually say "comes with cert." does that mean a certification that they were captive bred and therefore legal to own? Is there a legal way to own asians in the US?

Asian Aros are still banned from being imported to the U.S. of A. The ones you see for sale are "smuggled" into the US most likely from Canada. Risky if you ask me.

I guess the legit captive breds have microchips implanted to prove it? So there is NO legal way to own one in the US right?
There is really no legit captive bred in the US, at least not in the eyes of law enforcement, in this case, Fish and Wildlife. Whether it has a microchip or not, it is still illegal to import. But, as with many things illegal, there is a booming market for the "illegal" fish, reptiles, marine corals, amphibians, etc.. How can you control it with little manpower.
I think the authorities are more concerned with the over abundance of meth factories in my town, than illegal pet fish. I'm a git me one!

The F+W people have been known to run stings. There are also scammers who will stick you for big bucks then ship you a jardini or even a silver, after all, you can't exactly sue them for not violating federal law now can you, especially when by doing so you could easily be admitting to conspiracy to commit a felony. They can even do so legally by importing the legal aros through an asian trans-shipper, If they ship through Taiwan they can legally say they are offering Formosan aros for sale. Even Public aquariums have problems getting true asian aros.
