I heard policy is being made to amend the ESA legitimatly to allow our beloved Asian Arowana to be imported legally in a couple years here in the states. As well I read that there is an existing loop hole that theoreticaly would allow hobbists to import legal Asian Arowanas affectively now. The loop hole if any you have not read about it, is in regards that Asian Arowanas are listed under the ESA as the species Scleropages formosus, however a couple years ago this species was devided into four seperate species (Scleropages formosus, macrocephalus, aureus, and legendrei as listed in Wikipedia). The later three are not listed under the ESA and hence are legal. I'm going to check with my UC Davis fisheries professor as well as a friend of mine that works for Fish and Game to ask whats going on with both of these situations. If this loop hole (and future ESA admendments) is not the legitimate case I would love to avoid a huge fine and the possibility of going to jail from buying an illegal aquarium fish. This of course is still intreging news and was wonderingif any of you have heard more on both issues (ESA amended policy and the loop hole)?

Why are asian's illegal in the US in the first place? Is it an environmental thing?

the owner of my lfs, who actully used to deal with asian aros, said something kinda simmilar to this. that they might make the asian aros legal in the us again. and that there trying to change the scientific name on the fish to allow them to be brought into the country. but its not gona happen...

there supose to be endangered in the wild, but all the asians being sold are farm raised... so theres honestly no reason for them to be illegal.

guarantee the demand of asian aros in the USA would wipe out the population of farm raised asian arowanas in the first year they became legal. then we'd be back to the same 'ol problem. its never gonna happen. we'll never get asian aros here, not legally at least

highly doubtful. there would be farms in certain parts of the us. and the farms in other countries would expand. even if they opened up the market and the u.s legalizes them, not everyone will be able to afford them. and most people in the us already have asians... so it wont really change anything, just that the non experienced fish keepers will start killing them off.

if they let aros back into the country, it will start very slowley, or only a select few will be let in. to ensure that the balance isnt horribley destroyed.. sooooo if this ever actully happens get your money on hand. because instead of paying 600$ for a 4" rtg. you will be paying about 300$

I would say that it would be like canada...how the prices of asian arowana is not a big different tho you can buy them legally at the fish store. Asian arowana is a big money market for alot of asian countries so if they do have it legal in the state, then the prices would go down just a bit but still they would be a pricey. I would understand where milkman is comming from.

well, its something alot of us have wanted.. but either way for most of us it dosnt matter if they become legal or not, because people can still get them now without any problems.. but it still would be a nice little addition... i'd love a tank with 8 asian aros :D and be able to post pics of it.

the lfs owned im friends with used to tell me he sold green based reds and greens for 20-40$.. THOSE must have been the days.
