Asian Arowana Again

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm actual new to these forums and apolligize for posting this initial blog twice once here and the other on introduction forums. The classification the way it is now would allow Scleropages macrocephalus (Silver Asian Arowanas), aureus (redtail goldens),and legendrei (super reds) to be exported. Amendments to the ESA still would have to be made to see the cross back golden and greens that are listed as Scleropages formosus. Due to the high price of these fish, in the USA that limited purchase would probably still be the case as only the most devote aquarists would keep these high priced specimiens.

Legal Asian Arowanas would be great if with CITES permits money would go to preserve Wild Arowanas as well as start up new Arowana farms being in the States or Asia. There are reptile farms out of Asia that require CITES permits for export and it is great relief to know you've got paper work and aren't going to be accused of anything criminal.

well, its something alot of us have wanted.. but either way for most of us it dosnt matter if they become legal or not, because people can still get them now without any problems.. but it still would be a nice little addition... i'd love a tank with 8 asian aros :D and be able to post pics of it.

the lfs owned im friends with used to tell me he sold green based reds and greens for 20-40$.. THOSE must have been the days.

Those are the days haha...yeah a tank with eight asian arows would be nice i would love to have a crossback tank and another RED arowana tank: Heres what it would look like---

Since you're new to forums stories of them becoming legal in a cpl years show up every
year don't believe it till it happens.
Even with the dividing of the the Asian arrow into various others they are still all illegal to buy, own, import or posess

I heard policy is being made to amend the ESA legitimatly to allow our beloved Asian Arowana to be imported legally in a couple years here in the states. As well I read that there is an existing loop hole that theoreticaly would allow hobbists to import legal Asian Arowanas affectively now. The loop hole if any you have not read about it, is in regards that Asian Arowanas are listed under the ESA as the species Scleropages formosus, however a couple years ago this species was devided into four seperate species (Scleropages formosus, macrocephalus, aureus, and legendrei as listed in Wikipedia). The later three are not listed under the ESA and hence are legal. I'm going to check with my UC Davis fisheries professor as well as a friend of mine that works for Fish and Game to ask whats going on with both of these situations. If this loop hole (and future ESA admendments) is not the legitimate case I would love to avoid a huge fine and the possibility of going to jail from buying an illegal aquarium fish. This of course is still intreging news and was wonderingif any of you have heard more on both issues (ESA amended policy and the loop hole)?

Though this may sound like aloop hole ;) All four divisded species are on the CITES list ;) Hence the Lacy Act still protects ALL 4 ;) These loop holes always sound very nice until they make the papers as not true and are usually proven with an arrest ;)

CITES Covered all The names last I checked... It is good practice to bring your paperwork to the board and post it with your opinions rather than to post un proven words.

Help us out ;) Let us too read your sources.. Will help with Credibility ;)
