new delhi
hi all i live in new delhi , & i am planning of getting a 8 inch golden arowana , i plan to put it in a 4X2X2 feet tank , i just wanted to know if some one has experience in keeping asian arowana , would like to get some tips , also do tell me:

1.Can i keep a pair of golden in 4x2x2 tank?? or a single with some peaceful cichlids will be better??
2. what substrate should i use??
3.what filter , i am planning of getting a top filter as it does not diesturbs the water too much & a big airstone, or should i go for eheim internal filter??

thanks in advance.a

Honestly I believe that tank is too small for any type of arrowana. The minimum for an asian would be a 6x2x2, and 8x4 for a south american.

Hi Devansh,

Just FYI: The standard answer to "tank size" is always going to be 6x2x2 or larger..However, this thread has some interesting discussion about keeping Arowanas in ~70-100 Gal. tanks. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=355866

And now to discuss things they don't allow on that Indian forum: In my opinion getting Asian Aros to India legally is practically impossible.

The law states something like "All livestock need to be quarantined at port-of-entry for x number of days" (I think it's 3 days). And the ports-of-entry usually don't have provisions to keep fish (any fish!) and can very easily just ask you to return the shipment to the sender..(unless you pay a small "fee").

This leads me to believe (and I may be wrong) that ALL live fish imported into India are brought in after paying an unofficial "fee" to the authorities to get the paperwork done.

If you have already figured out the procedure to get these Asian Aros imported to India, I will really want to know how it's done.

If you (like me) have little or no idea, I hope someone from India who has imported fish into the country has help us.

Good luck,
Sid

PS: If you are just planning to buy it from a store in India (without worrying about how it's got into the country), let me know if you need any leads. There are a few stores in Bombay which stock Asian Aros.

6'x2' would be good for a years, would be best to go 6'x2.5' for life or bigger.

Now, the following will be a very stupid question.. but I am going to ask it to ensure we are all on the same page:

You are getting an Asian Arowana at 1.5 to 2K...Is that amount in Indian Rupees? (~35 to 40 USD?) or is it 1.5-2K USD (~70,000 to 90,000 Indian Rupees)?

(If it's a decent quality Golden or Red Asian Aro, it will be 1.5 to 2K USD. (Greens will be significantly cheaper..Or Else you might be confusing a Pearl Arowana (which are available for about 1.5 to 2K Indian Rupees) for an Asian Arowana.

(As I said, the question above is potentially very stupid, but I am asking because you have mentioned 1.5 to 2K and 500 USD is a pretty large difference :) )

Posting a video or a picture of the fish you intend to buy will be excellent!

Ah, the good old "I can't provide my aro with a proper tank" feel good thread.

IMO, a 4x2x2' will eventually be way too small for a fish that should get over 24". Maybe you can stunt it's growth and be OK.:(
