here is the story:

i recently purchased a gar at a LFS and the store owner told me that it is an asian gar. i never heard of an asian gar before so i asked him is he sure that it is not a florida or spotted gar? he insisted that it is not a florida or spotted but it is an asian gar. it looks nice and so i bought it.

i still have doubt that it is an asian gar so i did some research on google and MFK gar forum but coundn't find any info. on asian gar. :screwy: hmmmm, to me it looks closest to a florida gar. so now YOU tell me what you think it is? or is there an asian gar species? thanks.

It's a florida gar...however, it may be bred in Asia lol. I've seen the same confusion with Asian-bred Silver arowanas...

Nice pick up!

yup, Florida gars are apparently being produced in Asia...hence the species is Florida gar, but from Asian farms/supply. there have not been any true gars out of Asia for millions of years (but there were some waaaay back in the day) --

ahhhhh, what you said makes so much sense now. thanks Solomon and others for the input. now i don't have to scratch my head anymore thinking what it could be. :D

BTW: but why would the importer goes thru the trouble of getting them from asia when they could just get them here in the US, wouldn't that be cheaper in transfer fee? unless there aren't many/any available here in the US.

Mass bred is cheaper I guess. Also, to add to the confusion, all the Asian Florida gar I've imported have come in as "gator gar".

My LFS was/is selling Florida Gars under the name "Marble Lined Gar". I think they just make crap up.

Its just a fancy name so they sell them i think!!! lol cooler the name more likely people are of buying them!! and considering most people don't have the space for a gar in there tank they gotta try and sell them somehow!! ha ha

MAYBE AN ASIAN BRED FLORIDA GAR
