Hey guys, its been a while.

Anyway, I now have a big coldwater system, and am looking for a few natives for it. The local asian market has a few fish I want, but how do I go about getting them? Would I just haul a cooler full of water in? How would I match the temp so it wouldn't shock the fish too much going from the tank to a cooler? Any ideas?

Has anyone bought something from a market like this before? How did it go? More specifically, how did you get the fish out of the store?

I've done it a few times and it's best to just bring a bucket for transporting the fish safely. If you speak the language of the fishmonger then it will be very easy to explain to him that you want the fish alive. He should have no problem adding some water to your bucket for your fish.

Ah, sweet they'll add water?
Hm. I'm not sure I know anyone who can speak the language though. The fish I'm looking at are sheepshead, so i'd have to use something bigger than a bucket, but that sounds like a pretty good plan. (:
Now to figure out how much an 18 inch or so sheepshead would weigh..

Can't say for certain but they should give you some water, the guy I bought from did.We had a time trying to understand each other but in the end he didn't mind my requests as long as I was buying. If the fish is too big for a bucket then get yourself a cooler.I have one for transporting big fish.Sheapshead sounds like an interesting fish.It would also be a good idea to get a battery operated airpump to oxygenate the water while bringing the fish home. They are not in the best shape at these markets and are probably pretty stressed out. This whole ordeal could stress the fish more and the oxygen would help calm it some.

If you can communicate to the fishmonger that you want the fish alive maybe he will give you a price for it rather than trying to weigh it alive which could kill it....I think when I bought a fish from them the guy placed it in a plastic bag with no water, weighed it and then he poured in the water. It was a few years ago.

all you have to do is give the store clerk a little extra money. those guys are poor immigrants, i am sure they'll even help you carry the fish to your car for extra $20
