They are not a mean fish in my experience, and they don't require much maintenance. I grew 3 of them in a 20 gallon tank up to a metre long each and never did any water changes. They can also be easily trained to eat from hand as well.

I had one that use to bite holes on the undersides of my bigger fish. They do have a mouth that closely resembles African lungs and have strong jaws. I guess it just depends on the individual fish. The ones I keep now have been pretty peaceful towards they're tank mates.

I have a monoperus albus since two years ago, mine is very docile & has been kept with clown loaches, yo yo loaches and polypterus palmases with no incidents whatsoever. It is now about 70 centimeters in length and the diameter is about twice my index finger. When it was smaller, it's very active and I could even hand-feed it. Now that's its older and fatter, it became lazy and just sit there on the aquarium all day with its nose sticking out of the water. Maybe I'll be like him too when I reach my retirement age ;) :D

It used to be very aggressive, catching guppies and sailfin mollies and river shrimps. Now it won't even gave chase anymore (except in rare occassions), it prefer mostly
my monopterus albus.jpg bloodworms.
