Two questions

First, have you done any koi keeping or any other native fish? I rarely see koi brought up on this site and as many know they commonly grow into monsters and are beautiful in my opinion. I have a mix of them with goldfish in a 2200 outdoor pond

Also, I just purchased my first "large" aquarium. It's a 5 foot long 100 gallon acrylic tank. It's in pretty rough shape so I'll be beginning a full restoration it. Do you have any tips for this kind of project or possible tools and/or kit I should be looking at? Thanks in advance

I noticed you mentioned WA. Are you from Washington? I'm in the Seattle area

The house I bought in Pasco, WA (2 houses: Pasco (Tri-Cities) and Vader (Longview area)) came with a large koi pond.and some friends bought me a few koi for the pond. However, I added in 3 different species of sturgeon and 4 paddlefish. That made it interesting for me.
I currently have a pond running. But, instead of koi I have 6 Wakin goldfish (red/white). I'll be adding more if I can locate panda and calico morphs.
As to your project, check out the site's DIY forum. There are several detailed threads on buffing out acrylic tanks, building stands and canopies, building w/d filters (along with drilling for bulkhead fittings), and installing weirs/overflows. Good luck.

Greetings Mighty Oddball,
I have a potential buyer from Washington(state). I know the species aren't restricted but what other permits do I need? I know my state doesn't require anything. I've called and searched Dept of Ag and Fish/Wildlife but haven't gotten a definite answer. Any help would be appreciated.

Oddball--

I know what F0 is, and F1. F1 is the fry of a wild caught pair. But what exactly is "F2"? Here' why I ask. If F2 is the fry of 2 F1's that are siblings, that is inbreeding. But if a breeder took an F1 from 1 pair of F0's, and an F1 from a completely different pair of F0's.....well those 2 F1's are completely unrelated. Their fry would be every bit as "genetically diverse" as any other fry produced in the wild and called "F0", right? so would those captive bred unrelated fish be F0? Assuming of course, all 4 F0's were of the same species and from teh same collection point?

And how much does this matter? I know fish are fine with alot more interbreeding than people, or dogs, or higher mammals. But at what point to problems crop up with interbreeding? And what happens? Colors fade and survival rates of fry decrease? Disease prone offspring?

Oddball Oddball You mentioned that you kept a Tegu. I will be getting an Argentinian black and white. Did you find your Tegu to be as intelligent as people say? They are supposed to be able to show love/trust to their owners and there are even rumors of them coming to you when called by their name over time. Did you notice any smarts or intelligent characteristics with your tegu?

Mine grew from a hatchling with me. He would come to me to get the patches around his ears scratched and to receive treats. I can't really say he'd come to me when called but, he never showed any aggression towards me while he had no problems tail-smacking visitors. I also knew to not get to close to him during a shed. He was a total grouch for several days. But, he appreciated getting the residual patches of shed of with a stiff horse brush after he soaked in his pool for a day or two. I'm guessing that his familiarty with me made him consider me as part of his colony so, we got along OK.
BTW, his 'cage' was a converted spare bedroom with a raised floor to allow for the installation of a filtered pond (with drains and refill plumbing). I installed a wrought-iron gate at the entry way to keep him from clawing his way through a standard interior door. He also had a patio door to a large dog run (with concrete curbing on the perimeter) with large boulders and logs so he could choose how much exposure he got outside. A horse trough was partly sunk on one side for additional soaking.
You couldn't do it nowadays but, back then we used to occasionally release a live chicken or rabbit into the outdoor enclosure so he could get some good exercise in hunting down live prey. Today, you'd be thrown in jail for doing that.
