Calling on all the oscar specialists here on MFK.

I saw Astronotus Crassipinnis which has peaked my interest.
I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between these vs the Astronotus Ocellatus (regular oscar fish).
They look like regular oscars to me so maybe someone can clue me in on what makes the Crassipinnis more special.

I might get one so any info will be very helpful.

Thanks

I have saw the ocellated spots on the dorsal fin base on regular oscars before and I also saw regular ocellatus oscars with just the tail spot and no dorsal fin base spots.

When I see photos of both types of Astronotus they both look like regular oscars to me.

I don't follow all these scientific terms.

Ok, let's make it really simple... At some point, these two fish became different enough that scientists decided they're two separate species. For you, just decide if you like the look of one over the other.

Special isn't exactly the word. Its more rare in the hobbie. There isn't a lot of difference in appearance or otherwise. The largest specimen found of crassipinnis is 9.5in while oscars have been known to get 14-18in. It's color is more drab IMO. If your looking for something different than your normal tiger oscar, but still look like an oscar I'd go wild oscar or crassi...if you want a colorful version I'd go red oscar. Now if a crassi stays in the 9.5-10in range that would be cool to have a mini oscar for less tank space, but really so little is actually known about it. Try this link below to shed slightly more light on it.

Crassipinnis aren’t a brightly coloured but stay smaller then regular oscars, I find them to be more peaceful then oscars as well
